I am trying to do a erase and install with 10.3 when I put the cd in and reboot while holding C key the mac installer does not come up on the top ? it just hangs at a grey screen. and will eventually just log back into the already installed os. Any suggestions? I have tried to connect it firewire and can erase the hd on it but if i do this will simply putting the install cd upon boot run it like it should ? Or would I still have the installer problem .

What kind of CD is it? A gray, system-specific CD? A black (or other colored) retail CD? A burned CD?

What exact model of Mac are you trying to do this on?

it's a ibook g4 1.06ghz i know the cd drive works when i try to install from the desktop it will say you need to restart your computer when it restarts it hangs until i restart again then back into 10.3 they are the grey factory cds.

Does that restore CD show the exact 10.3.x version on the label?
You need to make sure that the grey disks are for the correct model.
They will refuse to install, or might not even boot the wrong Mac model.
If that 1 GHz iBook G4 is a 14-inch model, then 10.3 should work.
If it's a 1 GHz 12-inch model, then 10.3 would be too old, and would need to be 10.3.3 or 10.3.4
14-inch, or 12-inch?

ok have you ever heard of a problem when doing the
mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -h now
in single user mode , well i did this on the 10.3 machine now it just goes to black-grey screen I can start in target disk mode though. It says root device mounted in single user mode though. did i mount something wrong to not want to boot back into the os ?

That wouldn't do much except to reset your system so you boot to the new user setup next time. There may have been something else wrong with the system, and you simply exacerbated the problem. Probably best to reinstall OS X using the Archive & Install option.
