Mac Pro (Early 2008) Graphic Card

Aaaaah, I see. Thanks mate :)

In that case, shall I go for the GeForce 8800 GT, or the newer (but not necessarily better) GeForce GT 120?

Both sport 512Mb of GDDR3 memory, but apart from that, I can't find a like-for-like comparison between the two.

I use the usual Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign applications, but also Premiere Pro and After Effects. I also spend a lot of time modelling and animating in 3ds Max 2009 via Boot Camp (Vista x64).

I would go for the new ATI Radeon HD 4870, but can't wait 4-6 weeks for it. And before you recommend it, the Quadro is out of the question ;)

Many thanks.

Nope.

Graphics cards between PCs and Macs are not interchangeable (for the most part). You need a Mac-specific graphics card.

Well, that is true unless it's stated that it works for both. ATI has had some cards recently that will work on both Windows PCs and Macs without any worry. It's just a matter of checking.

I've only noticed this with Radeon cards from ATI. This isn't usually the case with other brands that use ATI's Radeon reference designs.

My PC gamer mates have seemed to suggest that the new ATI cards are a good buy - lower price per performance than the Nvidia ones. Even Nvidia fanboys I know have been buying ATI 4870s over the latest Nvidia GTX2xx and GTX3xx cards.

The GT120 is what they used to call a 9500GT I think - not a spectacularly impressive card - I'd probably go for the 8800 GT myself but I have had very good luck with the 8800 series cards. That or the 3870 satcomer linked.

Thanks guys.

Decision made. I'll go for the 8800 in the interim, then the ATI 4870 when I feel it's justified.

An interesting point though, any GPU will actually work on a Mac Pro, while in the Windows environment. I'm just surprised no one mentioned that point regarding my first post!

Still, thanks again everyone.
