Macbook Howls and Crows

5:37 pm yesterday: howled.

Stopping Growl didn't seem to have an effect.

Doc, the sunrise/set theory has been proposed, and it does make sense to a degree. The Console never shows anything relevant or consistent, and sometimes doesn't even show an entry for a half hour or so before the noises are made (see earlier in this thread).

I wonder if it could be tied to my Weather Channel widget? That's the only thing I can think of that is both constantly running and would know when sunrise and sunset are. Hmm... Anybody else running that thing?

5:50 pm: Howled. ><'

I turned off the Weather Channel widget and have been using the default weather widget that comes with Dashboard. I know that can't be causing this problem or else more people (like, every other person with a MacBook) would have it. Argh. I'm putting my TWC one back on.

Thing running right now: Firefox, Preview, Mail*, Bluetooth File Exchange*, Finder*. Ones with *s are running passively in the background and have no windows open, if that makes a difference.

Growl is still on, but I doubt that's what's causing it. After all, tons of people use Growl, yet I'm the only one with a MacBook full of wolves and chickens. T_T'

Console entries for the past hour or so: (sorry about the size; this board could use spoiler blocks...)

How about experimenting by uninstalling growl (don't just turn it off)
It does notify you of various events, so don't you think it's reasonable to try working without it for a few days?

Do the alarms happen while you are logged in to a different user account?

5:54 pm: Howled. Still haven't bothered switching back to my TWC widget...

Delta, I don't have any other user accounts. I guess I could create one for the purpose of testing this theory, but otherwise, I have no idea.

I guess I could uninstall Growl... argh. *do*

8:25 am: crowed.

><' I'm putting Growl back on (I did uninstall it; Adium's been giving me hell). Switched back to TWC widget, not that that seemed to matter either.

I am officially at a loss. I am completely out of ideas. Any more suggestions from you guys? Suppose I'll start asking around on other forums too....

o_O It's a good thing I decided not to go to class today; a whole lecture hall of econ students would have been treated to my comp's roostery badness.

8:00 pm: Howled.

Doc, you are correct.

XD OMG ora you are a lifesaver! This wasn't really a problem per se, but now I don't have to be freaked out because my computer's making strange sounds and I don't know where they're coming from! Thanks!!!

See JD, your mistake was that the stake needed to go through the heart of the adorable electronic pet rather than the machine as a whole, how many times do I have to tell you, collateral damage is baaaaaaad! :)

Hi all

I've stumbled across this site as I googled 'macbook howling' etc

I have a macbook pro 2.6ghz Intel core 2 duo and my macbook is doing exactly wha Navi's is :-(
No one could have installed any 'joke' software as I'm the the only user and the only person with the password to the machine. My howling and cock a doodle doing is more sporadic. The last two nights at around 23.54 it's made the cock a doodle do noise (jumped out of my skin) It appears to have nothing to do with sunrise and sunset etc.
I happened to mention this sometime ago to the genius's in the apple store and they looked at me like they were sizing me up for a straight jacket :)
They said they had never heard of this problem and would need to take the machine to 'listen'. Chances of them catching it happening were slim

The only thing I have the same as Navi is the 'Flappie' widget..Could it be this???

Any suggestions would be helpful, i'm sat on edge waiting for it happen whenever i'm on my laptop. As far as I'm concerned chickens belong in a field and NOT in my apple

Help.......

H

Did you try driving the stake through it?

As the long thread demonstrates, despite her denials, she had the widget Flappie that signaled evening and dawn. That is all it was. You probably have the same thing, save it is set for a different time-zone. If that is the case it will do it about the same time. You can watch Activity Monitor to see if the program shows up, or post your Consol logs from that period--a Guru may be able to identify the culprit.

Hey DOc

I read what I thought was the entire thread and somehow missed the previous page DUH.
I've deleted the Flappie widget, problem solved once and for all now!

Thanks so much for your help and quick response.
