MBP Freezing and displaying black/gray distorted lines on screen

my macbook pro has been freezing and crashing lately. the screen ends up looking like this: http://pic.gd/34d8db

i have checked/repaired disk permissions.

not sure what could be causing this problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it do this if you boot from an alternate source, say, the OS X Install/Restore CD/DVD that came with the computer?

Apple may repair that regardless of your warranty.
