i'm currently running OS X 1.3.9. recently notice that my harddisk space been reduced from 8.8 gb to 7.9gb within 2 months.

tracking back i...
1) did not install any programs
2) copies less than 30 mb of mp3
3) ran updates as it prompts
4) ran usual applications like mail/safari (i clear cache every 5 days)

what could be problem? is there any hidden cache on system which i can clear?

I'm assuming you meant 10.3.9. :p

HAve you checed the cache settings in your browser(s)? You might want to set them to something smaller. Firefox tends to use up 50 MB for space. I usually set it to about 4 MB and have had no problems.

Also remember that depending on how much physical RAM you have, OS X is using some hard drive space as swap and does so dynamically depending on how much is needed.

Mac OS X constantly "eats" harddrive space. You might find that after a reboot, you have more space free than when the computer has run without reboot for a couple of days or even hours. This is, of course, more obvious when you're below 10 GB free space, since you might _check_ it more often. Either way: It's not unusual that working in some programs which use a lot of memory (Photoshop, Illustrator, similar stuff), that Mac OS X takes more harddrive space for virtual memory.

To check for evidence of what the last two posts mentioned, look at your available drive space after a reboot, and before you start any applications.

If this isn't the issue, if a reboot doesn't yield significant additional drive space, you can try some of the cache/swap/temp/log cleaning routines that utilities like Onyx offer.

thx a lot for replies guys. i've tried above methods. manage to get my hard drive to 8.02gb. and now..it's down to 7.82gb despite not running any programs and doing another clean up with onyx. (can't seem to run yasu..keeps hanging) overalll..it's still far frm my initial 8.8gb.

any other takers? thx a lot!

ok..i did a omnisweep and realised i've got duplicate of applications/documents etc in user folder. (saved under my user profile.) and worse of all..this folder includes files which i've already deleted from the main Application folder. question is...are these 2 linked? how can i save some memory frm this situation.

btw, i'm thew only user on this com.

here's a link to a screen capture of omnidisksweeper

hm. can't see the screenshot. but i guess, too, that somehow you accidentally duplicated/copied a folder or something... this shouldn't just "happen" (and doesn't).

managed to retrieve 4+gb of memory space by deleting off the application folder. just wondering..what 'standard' folders should be in the User directory?

btwe..thanx to all who replied.
