Saw this article on Lifehacker today http://lifehacker.com/5087956/customize-your-own-killer-enigma-desktop and it got me to thinking about whether or not there was a way to do anything similar on Mac. I've been Googling and searching help forums but all I've found are desktop shots that basically feature different wallpapers and slight tweaks of icons and the dock.
Is there anything on the mac comparable to Rainmeter or Samurize on Windows?
If you're still running Tiger or earlier (not Leopard), you can twiddle with ShapeShifter, which is the de facto way to "skin" Mac OS X.
It's been known to cause many problems (actually, it's the "Application Enhancer" that gets installed alongside ShapeShifter that's the culprit most times).
Running an up-to-date version of Application Enhancer will not cause any problems. That said, in my experience, there are some faulty/outdated guiKits that can cause problems with ShapeShifter, and slow down the system. Still, there are some well designed themes such as X-Metal, BBX Mercury, AmuNRaa and Lantern that work quite well and are stunning to look at. But yes, unfortunately SS has not been updated for Leopard and it looks like it never will be.
