Mouse button function auto-swapping

Have any of you encountered a situation wherein the left and right mouse button functions seem to swap, seemingly out of their own volition?

It happens to me like 10 times a day and then I have to press both mouse buttons simultaneously to take things back to normal. Maybe there is some kind of setting or unix trick to specify "NEVER CHANGE LEFT AND RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON FUNCTIONS?"

Thanks for any input you may be able to provide,
Rafael

first check the Activity Viewer and see if a family member or a friend has a hidden program prank running on your Mac. Second check your Mouse's System Preference and see if it is sharing a keyboard shortcut with another program you might be using. After that I am out of ideas, good luck.

Sounds like a hanging mouse button, so pressing one causes both to actuate. Mainly, you would see a right-click happen, I suppose. Pressing both buttons may cause the hanging button to 'unstick' and you are OK until it happens again.
Is this a Mighty Mouse, or a 'normal' multi-button mouse (non-Apple)?
Does this same mouse also have problems on a different Mac?
Have you tried a different mouse on your Mac?

Also, a mighty mouse relies on the software settings to work properly, as there are no mechanical buttons to distinguish left from right. The mouse senses your finger position, so that's why it will not work properly if your fingers are contacting both 'buttons' at the same time.

Monitor whether or not this is happening while doing specific tasks or using specific apps, might be tiresome doing this but it'll help troubleshoot the issue. Try testing this *bug* using another account for a few days if possible, too.
