In my sharing control panel under my computer name my IP address is blank and no matter what i do i cannot get it to display a figure.

i have tried DCHP, manual etc
reinstalling my ethernet
restoring my software
zapping PRAM
reparing preferences
running mac janitor
running disc checks

i suspect a file is missing somewhere. the computer is used by a lot of other people and maybe someone was poking around where they shouldn't. do you know of anyways to fix this. i'm suspecting reinstalling the software but i would prefer to drag files acroos from another mac which i have on hand.

thank you

Simple questions:
1. Is your Mac plugged into an ethernet router or hub, or connected via AirPort to another computer ? If not, it won't have an IP address.

2. Your IP address should be displayed in the Network preference pane, not Sharing (per se). Check that and select Show : Network Status to see your connections. A green light means a connection is present and it will show you your IP address.

1. My Mac is plugged in to a switch with several other macs which are all working fine. i have tried different cables and sockets that are known to work but i'va had no joy here.
2.Yes in network preferences i have supplied an IP address for both manual, and manaul with dchp. i even tried dchp but without a dchp server it can't work. one thing i have noticed is that on all the other emacs, if you supply an IP adress it will show up in the sharing control panel wether you are connected or not.

i will check my network status tomorrow as i'm not with the emacs at the moment.

thanx

nah this is an isolated network. it was supposed to connect to another departments network via fiber but the fiber speeds are incompatible and there is no communication. All other emacs work fine

Are you saying that the Emac will not accept and display even a manual IP address? Do you see any error message when you try to set the IP address? Remember that this eMac must have a static IP that is different from any other computer, so you need to know what range of IP addresses to work with. If all of your other eMacs have static (manual) IP addresses, then this one should be set the same, with the exception of the actual IP address.

yes i configured this mac exactly the same as it's neighbours.

In a last didtch attempt. i did a network install of the 10.2.8 update and it has fixed the problem. Which is strange sincea all the other emac were running fine on 10.2.5. There must be some corrupt file somewhere.

thank you for the help.
