need help Jaguar won't install on beige G3

Hello everybody!

I have a problem that needs fast solution coz I have work to do!!
:)

here's the thing:
I have a desktop G3 (beige) and I have to install Jaguar. I can't do it on a more than 7GB partition so I used the stock 4GB Quantum drive. The thing is that the disk does not spin up when booting from the Jaguar installation disk. so I can't "see" it neither from the installer nor from the disk utility. It works fine on OS9 though, no questions asked or problems whatsoever.

any clues?

thanks!

You *can* install Jaguar on a Beige G3. Not a great idea, but you
don't need xpostfacto. That's needed for Panther.

The OSX installer doesn't have a finder, so you won't see the HD.

You don't have enough HD space to install OSX. Or maybe you do,
but you won't have space for apps or OS9. You need a larger HD,
and as you noted, put OSX into its first partition (7gb).

but the problem is that the HD does not even spin up. it remains just sitting there, dead. In theory Jaguar takes 2GB +/- of disk space so that's not the problem.
Is there an order of some sort I can give the disk to make it run?

thanks!

Have you checked to see if some sort of firmware upgrade is needed? I had problems installing OS X (I believe it was Jaguar at the time) on a beige G3 in my last job. It never quite worked for me. Mind you, this was before I knew about the 8GB issue, so that might have been my problem.

Have you tried zapping the PRAM to make sure everything is ok? At least that way you can rule out that the HD might be dead or something. That way you can start again.

Did you reformat the disk before you tried to install? If so, what drivers did you specify with that reformat?

The only other thing I can think of is your version of Jaguar is bad. Where did you get the version of Jaguar? If it's something you bought off E-Bay, that might be the issue. Especially if it was a system disk provided by Apple for the restoration of newer model machines.

XPostFacto isn't needed for Jaguar on a beige box.

the hard disk works fine with system 9.2.2
it spins up and all...
the Jaguar Installer CD was used on this machine before without problems (but never installed in THIS particular drive)

I downloaded all firmware updates for this computer...

I can't undrestand it....
is there any firmware for the drive and the drive only?

could it be that Jaguar does not "support" this particular drive?

Have you checked the jumper settings on the drive? I believe, for that machine, that a single hard drive on the IDE bus should be set for "Master". If you have it set as "Slave" or "CS (Cable Select)" then one of the problems you may encounter is that the drive doesn't spin up or is not recognized by the OS X installer.

What format is the hard disk in? Check in the system profiler.

If the drive truly doesn't even spin up during the boot, then it sounds like a jumper problem, or perhaps some sort of IDE conflict... I don't think the format of the drive would have much to do with this (as even an ext3-formatted drive will spin up in a Mac), but you never know...

I had similar problems with SCSI drives in an old 7600 where one of my drives wouldn't spin up, or failed to spin up except during a cold boot. It is rather weird that it's happening with an IDE drive, though...

the drive is formatted in System 9 as HFS+ (extended?)

I have not a clue on the jumper positions because there is no marks on the drive and 4 different jumper positions. but as the drive is not markes i don't know which is which.

i tried 1 by 1. the first two positions no change
the second two positions made the system to freeze on a white screen with a little black cursor on the upper left side just befor the startup chime. And even then nothing more happened.

I'm really puzzled....

I have not installed on a beige G3, but i have read some articles saying that on certain motherboards in the beige G3s that the position in the IDE chain matters. You might was to do some searches on the jumper/order of the drives and see if that brings back anything.
