Optical drive woes

My Macbook Pro is exactly one year old (no Apple Care deal).

CDs won't install.

The CD (or DVD) just sits in the slot and there are some strange whirring noises.

Any ideas would be welcome.
 
Try a lens cleaner cd yet, or a gentle blast of Dust-Off thru the slot? More than likely your drive went south.I have a 1st gen.MBP and I'm on my third drive and from what I understand I'm not the only one.
Might try Apple for a repair.So close to the warranty end they might be nice about it!
 
I suspect the drive is kaput as CDs are now rejected immediately.

Annoying as although I have had the laptop one year I have only used the optical drive four or five times.
 
UPDATE: Rang Apple and they booked me into the Apple Store in Liverpool. They replaced the optical drive without any fuss, even though my warranty expired the day before! Well done Apple.
