Playing msi files

.msi files are usually Windows installer packages - for installing software on Microsoft Windows.
So - you would need Windows to use those .msi files.

Can you give an example of one that you want to use, so someone here can verify that's what you need?

I have downloaded a software program for watching tv on the computer, that works on some Macs. They told me to try it and if it doesn't work they will give me a refund.

What program? Please provide a link.

It's likely that the company offers the software for Macs and for Windows PCs, and you simply downloaded the wrong version. If you downloaded an MSI file, then you downloaded the software for Windows PCs -- go back to the website and search for a link to download the Mac OS X version.

Hint: it's virtually impossible to give us too much information on your problem, but very easy to give us too little. Be as verbose as possible, and provide links to any and all software you reference. Be very specific: when you say, "Works on some Macs," please list those Macs, and tell us what model of Mac you have as well.

I have an IMac 10.5 operating system. The software I downloaded is from the web site livetv4me.com. It is an msi file. I asked which Mac operating systems it would be compatible with. They didn't know. They said "it works on some of the Macs, and doesn't work on some of the Macs. They said to download it and if it doesn't work they will give me a refund.

From their FAQ page:
What Operating System do I need for LiveTV4me to work?
LiveTV4me works on any computer running Windows 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP or Vista.
They do not appear to offer a Mac version. Methinks you've been lied to by them.

Of course, in a sense, this will run on a Mac computer -- as long as that Mac computer is running the Windows operating system (via BootCamp or some virtualization software like Parallels, VirtualBox or Fusion).

I had the same issue with them, but they do have an online version for mac users. Just contact their support (which I found is pretty responsive) and they will give you access to it.
