Hello just got a g3 for my son and I am running an old internet explorer version everytime i try to download safari or firefox it pulls up internet explorer and never fully loads help!!

You may be trying to download a version of Safari or FireFox that is too new for your system software.
What version of OS X are you running? Go to your Apple menu, and choose 'About this Mac' - which should tell you which OS X version you have.

You need to post ALL of the information contained in the pictures above.

There is a 10.0.4? Are you sure it is not 10.4?

I am working on another computer its 320 mb sdram power pc g3 400 mhz speed and its mac os 10.4 i think i need to get some more ram for sure.

Yes, there is a Mac OS X 10.0.4.

It's ancient, and hardly anything you would want to use today is compatible with it.

Verify that indeed you have Mac OS X 10.0.4 instead of Mac OS X 10.4. If so, then you're better off upgrading to at least Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) or Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4). You'll have to look online on places like eBay to purchase one of those operating systems, as Apple no longer sells them.

Not knowing that info is not a crazy thing - you're not born knowing that kind of info.
It's easily available at memory sites that give you a means to configure memory for a Mac, or through the very complete software called Mactracker.
http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/
The slot-loading G3 iMac will have two memory slots. Each can have as much as 512 MB, so the maximum RAM memory is 1024 MB, or 1 GB.

i'm still not sure what OS X version you have? is it 10.0.4 (certainly possible), or 10.4.x? That will make a big difference with suggestions for how to proceed....

Oh . . . ElDiabloConCaca gets "Thanked," . . . but do I get "Thanked?"

The specific information contained in the About This Mac--shown in the pickies--is what is needed to move forward. It will confirm the OS, the exact machine, which will then tell us how much memory the machine can take, and whether or not any version of FF that will work on it will be useful.

But . . . do not bother to read my posts . . . no. . . .

I wish I could copy and paste the screen to show you the information. It won't let me pass the front screen of yahoo because the explorer broswer is old. Also, when I try to download by dropping and dragging it doesn't work or when I put in a game it brings up Classic 9 whatever that is ??? Its says it cannot open the application?? Can you tell I don't know much about macs

SAFE!

You can do a Screen Capture of the files or used a very sophisticated set of tools:

then transfer the data HERE with one of these:

love the pics doc x and I did that already remember? when I click on the apple and select about this mac it gives me a 320 mb and ox 10.0.4 thats all doesn't give me the option to get more. I also opened the back of the computer and saw one 64 mb ram and one 256 mb oh yea I did an update to my software from online thinking that would allow me to download a new browser because mine is old but it still won't let me :(

You need to click More Info . . .--unless for some reason 10.0.4 does not have that feature. Let me put it this way, I stayed with OS 9 LONG after that was obsolete.

I mean we still have no idea what Mac it is--maybe a Guru can recognize it, but there are quite a lot of "G3"--my Widdle Pismo was a G3. Is that what you have? Is it a PowerBook? Is it a Pwer Macintosh Minitower? Desktop?

Basically, you need a better OS. It is old. Obsolete. You could go for 10.2 or 10.3--if you can find them--but as others recommend, 10.4 to 10.5 should do it--look on Ebay but make sure you get a bona fide--"he's bona fide!"--Retail disk--rather than a machine specific installation disk which will not work.

To put it bluntly, that machine is a peice of crap and that version of OS X is
worthless - it will likely be good for nothing more than a HUGE pile of un-needed frustration.

My suggestion is to not even waste your time on that iMac. You can get a newer model macintosh computer for less than $500 that will accept more RAM, have a faster processer, and will run a newer more stable version of OS X.

I agree with g/re/p (although perhaps worded a little differently)!

That machine probably will not be extremely useful for anything but nostalgic purposes. I keep a few 5- and 10-year old computers around, but I'm a huge computer-nostalgia buff, and I wouldn't try to have someone who was less experienced with computers use them for any day-to-day stuff. They're strictly for memories, in the corner of my min... er, I digress.

What you've got on your hands is a great nostalgic computer. It's time to weigh in, like g/re/p said, and see what the cost of upgrading the computer would be vs. simply purchasing a new/used computer. For $500, you can get into the action of Snow Leopard on a Mac mini and have a computer that will last you 5 years or more. Or, for half that, you could spend your time upgrading the G3 iMac that will never be faster, is already past its prime, and can only run OS X from three generations ago.

My opinion is to sell that computer for $50 or $100, save for the next few months, and surprise your son with a $500 Mac mini for the holidays. Of course, you know your financial situation much better than I do. If that's not a possibility, we can suggest upgrades for the iMac that will, at the very least, get you up and operational (if not severely dated).
