PowerBook G4 dead ...help!

My PowerBookG4, running 10.3 won't start up any more... what's going on?

I was yesterday cleaning up a bit the HD, I repaired permisions with the Disc Utility, then I used the Macjanitor, then I did nothing for a while, after I Norton-virus -scan the HD and put myself to sleep.... zzzz.

I waked up this morning, and the computer was stacked at some frame of the flurry-screen-saver... and didn'te react to anything, not even possible to force quit...

Then I pressed the power button and nothing... the circle stoped spinning after a while.
Restarted, the same happened.

Place the CD of the Software install-restore... and the only thing I see is over and over again a message that says:

Now, I'd like to try the HardwareTest CD, but I can't even get out the previous CD (...by the way, is it any way of doing that with a paper clip as in other machines?)

Heeeeeeeeelp..!

I'm getting desperate, never had such a problem b4, sorry.

Any words will be very appreciated, thanks, fernando

:(

try resetting pram:
boot and press: option+apple+p+r
Try booting into alternative (hold the option key) and then press F12 to release the CD.

Impossible to get the CD out, none of the options above mention produce any change...

The PowerBook stops "loading something" just after the first few seconds of usual start up manner...

any other suggestion, to remove the CD at least..?

Well, if all else fails, to remove the CD, try this:

boot the computer while holding down command (apple key to some), option, o, and f
you should get a very basic command prompt type interface. At the prompt, type

eject cd

Hopefully this will spit out the cd. Then type

reset all

Just for good measure. Should be similar to reseting the pram, if I am not mistaken. Finally, type

mac-boot

to continue booting. Although I'm not absolutely certain if you need the dash, if that doesnt work, replace the dash with a space :)

I'll verify the commands once I am back at my computer after work(as it has been a while since I used them) but I am fairly certain those are correct. I don't know if this will help with the booting problem, but it should at least get your CD out.

Got the CD out..!!!!

the way bobw described didn't work, my intuiition told me to keep the eject button pressed while starting the PowerBook... now is out. Ibelive what macavenger suggested me might work too, but I don't have to try that now.

The computer has crashed again after restart, so now ...what to do?

..the above was finally aplied, but "reset all" was a comand unknown by the type interface. We definetelly need the dash. So the comand is "reset-all", either "mac-boot".

after those comands, I get a grey screen, with a darker grey in the middle, and a message on it that says in many languages: "you need to restart your computer.Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." followed by the same message in German, French and Chinesse/Japanesse...

and now..? 'cause this doesn't make the computer work.

?

and then I runed a succesful complete "hardware test CD".

No probles found... but still doesn't work.

now with the above tips, I know at lest hot to get in and out a cd...hahaha!

what to do now..?

Disk Utility solved it all!!!!

I placed the OSX install cd, runned the Disk Utility, and it founded many problems..., a volume couldn't be rapaired.
quit, run Disk utility again... and then all was repaired, and no problems were found, restarted, and perfectly working now.

I imagine the problems were because of Norton antivirus... and read in this site many complains about Norton in general... any better antivirus sugestion?

Thanks, fernando
