Real RAM usage ?

Once I get paid for my latest job I'm going to upgrade my iMac TFT to Mac Mini. Since the cost of RAM is high I'd like to know some peoples' real experiences with Tiger.

I have 786 MB in my iMac TFT and I have never ever paged out on it. The most intensive thing I do is Photoshop, but! before you jump to the conclusion I need more RAM, the most intensive thing I do in Photoshop is likely to be a 1024*768 3 layer image. If it pages while doing that, I can live with it.

I just don't want it paging every day with Tiger and a tonne of of Firefox windows open, as well as occasional gaming (FPS and Age of Kings, yeah it's old but it's good).

Will 512 do it for me?

(PS Sorry if this has been asked before, I'm sure it has but I couldn't find a thread on it)
 
If you're gonna do the Mac mini, I would suggest going all the way and slapping a 1GB DIMM in there. 512 may be nice, but you'll, no doubt, outgrow that in the coming years.

I was sure I would outgrow the 786 in my iMac and I never even came close with Panther. The only thing that is likely to push my RAM usage up is a major change in MacOS or applications that I use.

Also this is a cost issue: for me, right now, 1 GB is simply not affordable. But then again, by the time I outgrow 512 (which I probably will at some point) I'll be out of university and have a job so I will be able to afford 1 GB :P
 
Don't quote me on this, but don't you void the warranty for the Mini if you install the RAM yourself?
 
No, you will not void the warranty doing so. However, if you break something in the process, well, then of course the warranty will not cover that!
 
Feuf, because I was certaily not planning on paying someone to install RAM for me, something I can do myself; that's like paying someone to wash my car (hmm, makes you think eh).
 
Oh, OK. :). I think I came across it on these boards a while back where someone wanted to upgrade the Mac Mini but had problems because of the warranty. And as luck would have it, I can't find the thread now...
