Resetting SMC

About once every 3 days I am having to reset the SMC on my iMac Version
10.6.8, 3.06 GHz Dual core due to either high fan speed on start up, won't wake up, or won't go to sleep. Resetting the SMC does fix it, but not longer than a week at the most. I've also tried resetting PRAMS and repairing disk permissions. Anybody know what else I might try to fix this? Thanks!

Could be either a hardware problem or a piece of software going out of control. Also it could be dust inside the iMac. Is this iMac under AppleCare at all?
 
Sounds like a newer iMac, so this shouldn't be the case, but having to reset the SMC a lot leads me to believe your motherboard battery is dead or dying. Just a shot in the dark.
