SMART Temperature

Does anyone know the critical upper limit of the temperature of a hard disc Hard on a G4/G5 (apart that is from sticking it in the oven)?

I would suppose it depends on the brand of drive. Some are Seagate, some are Western Digital, some are Maxtor... to get the exact operating temperature range, you'd have to hit up the manufacturer's site.
