i'm trying to install a program i got for free onto my macbook pro.

i have to go to my applications > utilities > terminal

i then open up a new command line and enter this:

sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts

then it asks for my password and i type in my password for my computer, the only password i have ever had for this computer, and the password that authenticates all of the system changes.

but it keeps saying that it failed and i can't continue on with what i need to enter to be able to run my program!

please help!

Does it say that your password is incorrect, or is it perhaps saying that the command you're trying to execute is invalid or has failed?

What is the exact text of the error message (you can copy and paste your Terminal session here -- that would be very helpful)?

Well sometimes the Admin password can become messed up if all you do is automatic Login and did an OS X "Upgrade" (ie 10.4.11 to 10.5.x) instead of an Archive & Install or a Fresh wipe and install. Well if you kept the latest OS X Install disk you can boot with it and when the initial screen comes up go to the Finder menu and use the pull downs to find "Reset Password". Plus look for "Disk Utility" and do a Repair on the boot up OS X disk. This way you can repair any disk malfunctions.

Good Luck.

P.S. - If you don't have and install disk and are technically inclined then read up on my thread [HOWTO] Reset User Password via single user mode .
