trash not emptying

A few months ago I purchased a MacBook Air and I have 2 problems:

1. I cant empty or secure empty my trash. The stuff just stays there.

2. When downloading Mac OS X update I keep getting this message - The update “Mac OS X Update” can’t be saved - Connection reset by peer. I made sure that my internet connection is working and that the power adapter was on.
 
Well to fix #2 just go to Apple's Downloads and get the 10.5.6 Combo Update. It is larger but it will most likely fix your problem. Be patient because it will reboot you mac twice upon initial restart, this is normal.

The #1 answer seems odd. I was just wondering if you had installed XP/Vista using Boot Camp? Can you install other pieces of software that require a password to install?
 
I downloaded the Combo Update and ran it(it took a long time to download). It seems to be working fine, but the Trash is still not emptying. I havent installed XP/Vista, but I had installed other programs with no problems.
Do you think reformatting the computer would solve the trash problem?
 
What, exactly, are the files in your trash?

"Get Info" on them and see what sort of permission you have on them:

make sure you have permission to trash it.

As you can see that is the information on a picture--RIP Sir John Mortimer, Q.C.--which tells you it is a "JPEG" size, when I created it, et cetera. What is the identity of the files you have in the trash?

I had no problem emptying the trash before... this problem only started occurring recently.
I have some documents and pics. There are a couple of .avi clips and songs. Nothing i haven't been able to trash before.
Actually come to think of it, I noticed this problem after I installed Microsoft Office for Mac. Do you think there might be a relation?
PS. as you might have noticed, I'm completely Mac illiterate. My husband bought me a mac air as a gift. I love it but i still didn't get the hang of it. So I really do appreciate your help.
 
You can check the file permissions by selecting Get Info on the file that's highlighted (like what Doctor X did with his graphic).

Since you suspect that the MS Office installation might have caused something to change, have you tried running Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility application? That might resolve the issues you're having.
 
I am having a similar problem, I can not empty my trash. I'm running on 10.5.6 and it seems like I have tried everything. I have all types of files in the trash, but nothing I do seems to empty it. I tried 'force empty', rebooted many times, repaired permissions, etc (I never touched BootCamp). When I try to empty the trash, I hear the sound effect of the trash emptying, the window disappears but the trash remains untouched!
 
The first thing you may want to try is holding down the Option key while choosing Empty Trash. This will force-trash locked files.

If that doesn't work, I've usually found this free utility to be effective in remedying the problem:

TrashIt! (free)

In those rare cases where TrashIt! hasn't worked, I've used a more advanced free OS X utility called BatChmod which has a "force empty trash" feature that always seems to be effective:

What have you heard about it? I've recommended it quite a few times, and I have never heard any negative feedback about it, except for the rare times that it didn't help.

Basically TrashIt! is just a compiled AppleScript that gives the UNIX command to force trash whatever is in the Trash directory.
