unable to enter password in Terminal

I am trying to enter some text in Terminal which I can do, but when I try to enter my password, I am unable to. I am new to the world of Mac's. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Your password will not be visible as you type it in your terminal. It's a security issue, and normal in the terminal. Just type your correct password, and press return. It will be accepted, even though you don't see any characters.
 
...the reason for this is so that if someone's watching you type your password, they can't see the password, and they can't see how long the password is, either (if the Terminal put an asterisk for every letter typed in your password, then the onlooker would know the exact length of your password, which is a huge advantage if they wanted to try and "hack" your password).
