Update Or New?

Here's my dilemma.

I have 2008 MBP, 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo, 4G RAM, 7200rpm HD; Wife has 2014 MBP, 2.5GHz I7, 16G RAM, SSD.

Her's FLIES!! Ever since I updated to Yosemite, I CRAWL. :( (Under Snow Leopard, it was fairly speedy....and NO, I won't go back)

Although Apple says 4G RAM is max, MacTracker says it'll take 6G. I can upgrade to 6G for $110 & install a 240G SSD for a tad over $200. BUT...big but...will it really do very much for my 7 year old MBP? A slight speed increase doesn't interest me, but a major one (maybe 20-30%) would save me around $2000.

Would like opinions, please

Oh yes. I like the new 'Dr. Cleaner' too, it's a PIA, but shows me I run out of useable RAM very fast. Have run the new DiskWarrior also. It's just not the zippy machine it once was.

IMHO, the major culprits are Safari and Yosemite. Why, I'm not qualified to say, except that Apple seems to want to cram 'everything under the sun' into their software.
