Using Setup Assistant

I just bought a 2.0GHZ G5 from Apple and would like to use Setup Assistant to transfer my files from the old computer to the new. My question is, do I have to have both machines hooked up to separate monitors or can I use the old machine as a headless computer or vice versa?
I have searched the Apple site for instructions on how to use Setup Assistant but have been unable to find any instructions so far. Can anyone point me to the right place? Thanks in advance for your help. :D
 
The first time you boot your new G5, the first screen asks if you want to transfer files from your older Mac, and takes you step-by-step through the process. You do need a system running at least 10.2 and with the capability to boot in target mode (the G4 in your list will do nicely) and, of course, a FireWire cable to connect the 2 systems.

DeltaMac, do I boot the G4 in Target Mode? How is that done? Sorry to seem like such a doofus. I would boot it in Target Mode, unplug the monitor from it, attach that to the G5 (along with the Firewire cable), then boot the G5 and run the Setup. I assume that this is the way it's done. TIA. :)
 
And, the Setup Assistant will tell you how to proceed. You shouldn't need a monitor connected to the G4 at all. Booting while holding the 'T' key will simply display a floating FireWire symbol.
 
As far as I know, the Setup Assistant is very good at explaining how to go about the whole procedure, so I would simply launch the Setup Assistant on the G5 and follow the instructions precisely. It should tell you exactly how to connect the G4 and exactly when to turn it on and what keys to hold down.

I would be hesitant to "mix" instructions from the website with instructions given by the Setup Assistant, instead opting to follow the Setup Assistant only.

And remember, if the Setup Assistant doesn't go smoothly or fails (which is highly unlikely), the data on the G4 is untouched, so you can always give it another go around.
