If you want a Mac OS X kind of feel just use NeoOffice. Ironically it translates Microsoft Office documents a lot better that Microsoft's new Office program.

When OpenOffice was still at version 2 and required X11 to work, NeoOffice was a great, Quartz-native substitute.

Now that OpenOffice 3 offers X11-less operation, the differences between OpenOffice and NeoOffice are almost negligible.

If I recall correctly, that's because back then it was (still?) based on Java... that's why the full name of the suite was "NeoOffice/J," J being short for "Java."

Java's kinda slow. Especially when loading an application suite of that magnitude.

I don't know if it's still based on Java or not... I suspect it is, if only as a container of some sort.
