Hi I have a mac book with built in airport. I need to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly when I travel to southern California. I can connect to lynksys here, but in Ca. I don't seem to have a good signal except for hotspot cafes Then they don't always have lynksys. I've tried to find out how to get a better signal, but so far nobody seems to know. I don't eve know how to buy time.

Ummm... what?

Where in California don't you get good signal?

WiFi needs a wireless router within range (typically about 300 ft.) in order to connect -- you can't just use WiFi anywhere (like you can a cell phone).

Well WiFi is not everywhere because bandwidth is expensive. Plus different Wifi frequencies (a, b, g or n) have different signal lengths & speed. Plus with different encryptions they cam also affect signal strength. You can learn about WiFi at this 802.11 wiki and this WiFi wiki link.

At the front office (like you are staying a hotel that makes you pay) or internet cafe that make you give your MAC address to get on the network.
