Would anyone recommend iWork'06?

Sunnz

Who wants a stylus?
It came with my computer I have been using it to write letters and assignment for school... so far I think I liked it.

Would anyone recommend it? Why/why not? I have been thinking of buying it but holidays are coming soon so I might wait till next year when maybe iwork'07 comes out just before school starts again? (Jan 07.)

As you've suspected, now's a bad time for buying iWork/iLife. Apple - in all probability - will release iWork and iLife '07 in January at MWSF. I'd certainly wait until then now.

I would definately buy it, but as Fryke said I would only after January when iWork '07 is out, which obviously has loads more features than the '06 version. Why? Because its simplicity, design and functionality all in one, plus its Apple, which means it must be good. Why not? Because not many people have Apple so you cant send it to many people, compared to MS Office.

office has the ability to open keynot and pages files... don't they... or is it the other way around.

Importing and Exporting .doc files isn't exactly rocket science, I have been doing so with my colleagues.

It would be so much nicer if it would support open document formats though - more and more people are using it now. (Well maybe it is because I am in a school environment, where most people can't afford software!!!).

It has the added bonus of being Universal, so it runs much faster than Office. Also, it's much cheaper than Office. If you're just looking to do word/ppt stuff, it'd be great. The '07 version would be worth waiting for, though.

OpenOffice.org just released a newer version of OpenOffice, and I have to say that word processing and spreadsheet functionality are on par with MS Office. OpenOffice needs X11 installed - it's on your Mac OS X install Disc.

What exactly do you mean by that? Are you referring to OOo2 in general or the latest release as in 2.0.4?

Yes, I just installed it last week and have to say that's come a long way. If you're a poor college student (like I used to be), this office suite, is well, pretty sweet! It finally opens MS Excel spreadsheets properly as far as charts being displayed mostly as they are in MS Office. The linear regression equation isn't displayed in the charts, the best-fit line is (if those are present in the Excel spreadsheet).

I've always used OpenOffice Writer for my resume/CV and exported it to PDF - works really well.

Actually I have already got NeoOffice which is based on OOo2.0.3. I used it for my open-presentation work.

Still, I like iWork, it is a lot more elegant, easier to make things look good and loads faster...

Kind of off-topic, but I just realized that ClipArt in PowerPoint is probably vector-based. Do PowerPoint and Word have some magically hidden ability to import vector graphics?

Umm I am pretty sure you can copy and paste vector graphics like clipart, pie-charts and stuff across powerpoint/word/excell... but probably not anything else that is non-microsoft... what kind of vector graphic do you want to import anyway?

I have NeoOffice too, but it isn't up-to-date like OpenOffice 2.0.4. Just give it a try, you'll see what I mean, plus, the new OpenOffice has some really nice new installation options regarding fonts.

I used to be into 'elegance' - not any more - I'm more into software's functionality and utility. If it does what I need it to do, then I download/purchase it.

I own iWork '06 and I have Keynote and Pages installed. I also have Office 04, but iWork will not open Excel or Word documents. Am I missing something?? I'd like to get rid of that crappy MS software as it takes forever to load excel or work even on a dual 2 GHz G5 with 3 GBs of RAM.

Ohh so 2.0.4 is actually a lot better compared to 2.0.3?? Well from your posts above, it seemed like you have only used 2.0.4 so I thought there wasn't anything to get excite about... but I guess I'll try 2.0.4 now.

I can see where you are coming from, I have been using OOo for some time too (it replaced my MS Office on Windows... some years ago.) and now when I tried iWork, I liked it.

Umm I have opened word .doc with Pages before... I think you just have to find the .doc in Finder, right click and select open with and choose pages; then "export" back to save any changes.

An Illustrator graphic, perhaps?

Apple needs to keep its shareholders happy (including the 49% owned by Bill Gates). So of course Apple will start charging even more for its first class products.

The waiting game basically doesn't work that well. If you want good products pay for them now.

Yours sincerely

Rhisiart (the other 51% shareholder).

You kidding? Unless you mean Apple either _won't_ release an iWork '07 in January or will start to charge more money for it, I don't see how not waiting would really help. If someone based on your tip buys iWork '06 now, I can almost _guarantee_ you that he or she will feel tricked when '07 brings the new version with more features for the same price without an option to update even more cheaply.

Well Microsoft has brought 1.5 mil of non-voting share in 97... I doubt that's 49% though.

But if they really want to make their shareholders happy, they'll just work on the hardware department for that anyway, it makes no sense to charge more for their software, as they might as well make it comes free with a Mac so people would buy a Mac. Whereas increasing the price of software may just make some people to pirate it rather than paying for it.
