Switcher Switched Back - Too Slow They Say

I'll say. Netscape 7.0 would quit unexpectedly while the Chimera 0.5 has been very solid. And as far as going back to PCs are concerned, I know there has to be a lot of pissed off people today, and far more than is in the entire Apple camp. Intel has abandoned RAMBUS in any future upgrades...

9 Vs X performance compared.Does MacOs X take advantage of your system?

He's right. Just run top in a terminal window and you should have about 50 or so processes running. I ran SpeedRun in Classic and it gave me a 603 overall and a 124 overall in OS X 10.1.5 beating out a 700 MHz eMac. Of course I just upgraded my Beige G3 to a 533 G4 but I don't think my 66 MHz...

    Sony PDA

Yes I use Missing Link to connect the T665C. It is not needed for the T615C but it is needed for the N7X series because like the T665C they have an MP3 player built in. To set it up, I just double clicked on the install routine and it loaded everything into the proper places. Make sure you...

    iBook display comes and goes

Hmm, could be a reed switch and it also sounds like your backlight is going. I'd take a trip to MacResQ so see if they have a suggestion. HTH

    Mhz vs Memory

I believe you're correct about the time frame. They've put out more white papers on VM in FreeBSD than most other systems. The truth is I believe Apple is using Mach's VM which creates some of the disk hashing by layering on memory objects. And that's probably due to using a real filing...

    Mhz vs Memory

We're cool. we just didn't want to see you waste a lot of time trying something thats been tried before. To stay on the subject, the short end of it all is the more RAM you put in your system the more executable memory space the OS makes and the more it can also put in public memory. This...

    Mhz vs Memory

He's right. Virtual memory in Mac OS X is not the same thing as VM in Mac OS 9 or Windows. It's not something physical like it is on those other two systems. Virtual memory IS the way UNIX runs in memory, period. What you might be thinking of is the swap space which is ALWAYS created on a...

    Linux PDAs with osX

As a computer science student, I think it would be awesome to have a UNIX based pocket computer. Does it have the full man help pages ? That by itself would be great. And to have access to shells, like Bourne, csh, tcsh, Bash, etc is cool too as you can experiment with scripts. As for...

    Remember Apple and G5?

Well I only purchase odd numbered processors, the 601 in my Power120, my current G3 and my next will be the G5. Hey a man's gotta have some kind of consistency.:D

    iTunes encoding quality

Haha, but not really. You'll have to replace the switches, and your power supply as well as find a rather LARGE reliable source of power. But really tubes are much more efficient, especially at high power. They just have no life and are expensive to make. But back to the subject. Since...

    Future of Apple With x86

This is historically true when Apple faced clones and they lost their shirt. They simply can't compete against more nimble and in one case better engineered products (remember Motorola) even when they controlled the design. The only thing that saved their butts during the clone years. I do...

New Macs SLOWER than their predecessors?

Yep. could be because the cache for the new computer is half of the old one and both computers are still talking to memory at 1 GByte/s. Also the XServe uses a PCI graphics card. I believe I'll wait until the 7470 comes out. One odd thing is the IBM 750FX is capable of 200 Mhz FSB. Now...

    Future of Apple With x86

And the difference between Apple and Be would be........ Nothing, they'd both be out of business. Read my lips - Microsoft WILL NOT let Apple sell OS X on Intel/AMD machines. Why because Microsoft owns all the distribution points and they own the marketing machine for Intel/AMD computer...

New chip?? Clear me out on that one

I personally am impressed with the Apple engineering for this bus chip. It handles any speed memory with any speed microprocessor bus speed. This means they can plop in a 7470 or any other processor without worry about matching bus speeds like they do on the Athlon systems I build. I had...

AWESOME Jaguar pricing (new Apple trick?)

They used to sell 10-packs all the time for OS upgrades, I know I used to buy them for my company.

    partition questions

I would partition the drive only to put Mac OS 9 on it's own partition. That being said I'd probably be inclined to partition it 50/10 or 55/5 ratio for Mac OS X/Mac OS 9. The Mac OS 9 would be the smaller of the two because of the huge influx of OS X programs being put out now.
