Well I think I found a simpler way. Use an app called LightIcon. It will restore folder icons to their original state or to any icon you create yourself. It takes 20 seconds. I don't know how it does it but it worked. Thanks Freemacsoft!

Folder icons replaced by generic document icons. How can I restore them? I tried the usual fixes of rebuilding Launchservices and iconservices. No luck.

When I replied to this I hadn't realized that it is from 2006. So gabrielleitao is probably long gone. Anyway both Gimp and Openoffice are now native Mac apps. I like Photoshop Elements.

What is wrong with Photos or iPhoto which come free with your Mac? Too simple?

The problem is back again. Deleting the pref file did not help. I think the problem is related to xtrafinder which I tried to install at one time. I deleted all the xtrafinder files I could find but this did not help. Any more ideas?

Well I just reinstalled the OS which got me back to normal. What I really want to know is how I got there in the first place? To me that indicates that there must be a switch burried in the OS that would get the old behavior back. This would be useful to know.

OK so I don't know how I did it or what preference or app did it but it seems to be back in my El Capitan 10.11.1 install. I am talking about if I double click on a finder folder it opens in a new window instead of replacing the existing window with a new window. Of course the back-forward...

My Elgato Eyetv 250 plus TV tuner has died. Elgato makes no replacement. I have a MacPro 3,1 with USB and PCI connections. Anyone know of one for the Mac? Are we marginalized again?

So I took out all the drives except 10.11. I installed the released version of 10.11. Still have the same problem

On my MacPro I have multiple Startup drives. On one drive I have 10.11 gm. When I try to boot to this drive the startup gets to the gray screen with the Apple logo and then restarts over and over. It does this in safe mode. All other boot drives boot fine. This is a new HD. I did Disk repair. I...

Reinstalling Mac OS always fixes the problem. I think only folder icons are affected. The folder icons become generic document icons.

I used APCleaner to remove all of Xcode. Then I downloaded and reinstalled. That went fine. But once again my desktop folder icons were gone. Rebuilding Launch Services did not help.Had to reinstall Mavericks.

I tried re-installing x-code and Mavericks. So what else can I do?
