    Hi, If I want to burn sensitive files onto a cd using Mac OS X, is there such a program I can use to lock the cd with a password? I suppose, somethng like PGP, but then, 650 MB is a lot, no? Does this exist or am I crazy? Thanks! G

    c++ compiler works or not?

    So I am supposed to download yet another copy of the Dev tool? Maybe that explains everything. After upgrading 10.1, I removed /Developer and then resintalled the Dev tool I downloaded prior to the upgrade. I didn't know there would be a 10.1 equivalent. Thanks, let me try that...

    c++ compiler works or not?

    Hmm, I couldn't find where compilers are even mentioned on the fink site. And my compiler.html only tells me what the different compilers are, not what compiling errors I might encounter. Does this not happen to anyone else? I have never written any c program and never compiled any either...

    c++ compiler works or not?

    I read somewhere that gcc is the compiler for C/C++/Obj-C. But typing gcc doesn't do anything; no such thing exists. Typing cc gives me an error: /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/libSystem.dylib load command 6 unknown cmd field My code is the following; no rocket science there! #include...

    c++ compiler works or not?

    Hi, Hmm, there is no forum for programming, huh? I mean, generic programming. What is the c++ compiler on Mac OS X? Thanks, G

    vi and emacs say don't use vt100

    Well, I recently switched to bash from tcsh, but my vi/emacs/vt100 problem persisted since before that. So can anyone copy and paste their .termcap for me so I can have any hope of running vi? It's important just because I need to use vi when editing SQL code in Mysql console (unless someone...

    is this real java???

    Hi, In the course of installing JBOSS on my OS X (not server) I discovered something weird. Part of the run.sh in JBOSS is that it looks for "Hotspot" on java -version output. If it finds HotSpot, it will assume java can take the -server option. Surprise! java -server yields an error on...

    vi and emacs say don't use vt100

    This is the relevant part of my environment variables for the term cap. Does anyone see any problems here that might indicate why vi (not vim) and emacs don't work? vi said: ex/vi: vt100: unknown terminal type And yes, I am using vi from mac (though I installed vim, I wonder if that had any...

    vi and emacs say don't use vt100

    No, I didn't have it checked. So that can't be it. Is vt100 not desirable? I believe that's what I have on my linux machine. Is there something else I should use, and if so, how do I change my user to use that? Thanks! G

    vi and emacs say don't use vt100

    Does anyone know why when I type vi or emacs I get error saying that vt100 is not an acceptable terminal (it does say "acceptable" but something like that). And of course, it doesn't run. anyone know why? Thanks G

    10.1: what happend to wget?

    Hi, I downloaded wget1.7 tar ball. I ran configure and here's what I got: checking for cc... cc checking whether the C compiler (cc ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables. I typed cc and it exists (not that it...

    tibook screen smudged by keyboard

    I read the maintenance section of my Tibook manual before asking this, even if it is a dumb-sounding question. How do I clean my screen? Someone said use alcohol and soap water. Before I risk destroying any coating on the screen, anyone know what I can use to clean? Thanks for the tip on...

    If You Have Os 10.1, Clean Install Now!

    Are there defragging tools on OS X I can use? Like the GUI one on Windows2000. But command line is fine.... G

    If You Have Os 10.1, Clean Install Now!

    Well, if it is not partitioned, how does booting into OSX or OS 9 make sense? I thought that you need to have a partitioned disk to boot into different OSs, where each os uses at least one parition. At least that's how it works in Linux/Windows machines.... G

    If You Have Os 10.1, Clean Install Now!

    Hi, Previous user mentioned partitioning. I just realized I don't know how much of my disk is partitioned for OS 9. How would I find out? The two OS's seem so well integrated; I can put my files anywhere I want to without knowing if they fall into which partition. So how much is partitioned...

    If You Have Os 10.1, Clean Install Now!

    Scuse my ignorance in grasping the english language, but "clean install" means wiping out your harddrive and install OSX.1 on it using Update disk, yes? Well, that would mean spending a full day reinstalling all my unix stuff and remembering where all my files used to be, right? Just...

    tibook screen smudged by keyboard

    Gee, that's part of the wear-and-tear? I had this laptop for only two weeks and saw the "signs". Never owned anything that wears and tears so quickly. Especially for a screen that, according to my salesperson, costs $100/in2 to repair. Expected more from the apple people (first time mac...

    tibook screen smudged by keyboard

    Hi, Does this happen to anyone else? It happens to my keyboard as well as that of a friend of mine. After having used the tibook for three weeks now, I notised that there are areas on the screen that look like they were made by the keyboard, or prints that resemble the shape of the keyboard...

    killing process in finder

    OK, before I type "reboot" or "halt", I want to make sure that it is a "normal" shutdown the same way if I had chosen "shutdown" from the apple menu in Acqua. Right? This is a normal shutdown if I type those commands either from a telnet session opened from OS X on that machine or from...
