    Classic Survial?

Let's be fair - OS X runs on a fraction of the hardware that 9.1 will. Sure, that gap is closing, and pretty soon Macs that can't run X will be like Macs that couldn't run 8 in 1997. But that doesn't make them any less useful or pleasing - we've lived with and loved them for this long, right...

    512MB ram?

What are you, some kind of speed freak drug addict?!@?! 1200 Baud! Feh! I wuz cruizin' my C64 along at a leisurely 300 thank you - and my Tape Drive could just barely keep up .... 40 minutes to load a game. And it was all so worth it! thedbp

Dock in right side of menu bar

The reason the menu bar is there is because on windows, and countless other OSes, you may never be quite sure where your menus will be. If they are window-dependant, they get moved and shuffled around, it is inconsistent. The Mac way is to always have them in the same place - so you always...

    Intel Emulation

Well i'm thinking VPC for X might be a lot better than the OS 9 version, simply because the memory handling will be much better, and that is one thing that was a major drawback on earlier releases. Also, if VPC turns out to be multithreaded, it will RULE. I've got my fingers crossed, and VPC 4...

    512MB ram?

Yes, yes I do ... and upset I was after first buying a G3 literally 2 weeks b4 the G4s came out (since I didn't have a computer b4 i bought it, i wasn't up on all the new items that would be released), then found out that the firmware wasn't going to let me upgrade to G4?!?!?! I'm glad they...

    Harddisk Optimizor is needed!

Seeing as the increase is so noticeable (I recently used Norton 6 to defrag my G3 and 8600), I don't understand why apple hasn't bundled a defrag util with ANY of their OS releases. But that might very well put Norton Utils on the chopping block, cuz that's the ONLY reason I paid for it, for...

    512MB ram?

There is available on the 'net a utility that will patch your RAM and, hopefully, make it work with the new firmware... also, have u tried switching the slots that your RAM is in? That actually helped me re-recognize a RAM stick in my G4 at work. i don't know the name of the prog to patch the...

When will OS X get faster?

Well, I visited the McClean store the day it opened, and as a nice woman who works there confirmed (well sort of, she winked at me when I mentioned the date) as I was checking out an iBook, July 17 is the date that Puma will be released, along with MSOffice for X. And by now we all should know...

    Mac OS X + 8600/300

Hi all! Just wanted to too you about some of my experiences after installing X onto my 8600/300. First, the instructions and necessary files posted by Ryan Rempel at http://homepage.mac.com/ryanrempel are probably one of the coolest thigns anyone has done with or for X yet. My 8600 is all...

Dock in right side of menu bar

There's a few places you'll likely be able to find "Docking Maneuvers." Try www.stepwise.com, www.macosxapps.com, or www.versiontracker.com. one of them HAS to have it. It lets you do all sorts of neat things with the dock, which just might give you a fresh perspective on this useful tool...

Video Mirroring & Other Portable Issues W/ OS X

No clue about the video mirroring or when it will be added (well, that's not true; my personal theory is it'll be added along with DVD support in 10.1 this July 17), but I had a video-related question as well: Does OS X support the RCA-style video in/out of the Beige G3 and earlier PowerMacs...

    10.0.3!!!!

What's the deal? It seems to do the same thing that they said 10.0.2 did, and 10.0.2 is nowhere to be seen for download anymore. Also, the d/l for 10.0.3 on apple's site is some 14MB (as was 10.0.2), yet the software update said my d/l was only 1 and change. man, apple really has their...

    OS 10.0.2 Build 4P12!!

I think we can all agree that 10.0.2 has some major improvements... VERY major improvements. But I switched back to 9.1 today, something I haven't done much of (unless I want to watch movies, grumblequack), and it finally occured to me... 10.0.2 is a lot faster than .0 or .1. But compared to...

Dock in right side of menu bar

There is a very easy shortcut keystroke to hide/show the dock. Option-Command-D. Also, if you turn off magnification, it makes the Dock less intrusive. TaskMenuBar was OK, but it doesn't offer the functionality of the dock... I'm not sure I understand all this resistance to the dock anyway...

Looking for a music-channel in MacOSX

my favorite kind. good luck trying to find that radio station, there's hundreds, and not all of them are up all the time. But in the meantime, if you want weird experiemental music, I have a name: Mr. Bungle You have your assignment. zjd

    OS 10.0.2 Build 4P12!!

Wow! I'm a happy apple camper ... as soon as DVD support comes out, I'm kissing 9.1 goodbye (well, aside from Classic of course). I'm actually getting slightly (consistently 1 to 2 fps) better framerates in iTunes fullscreen under X than 9.1. And I definitely noticed the speed of the Finder...

    x86 Binary with 10.0.1 Update

Tetrahydrocannibanol, amanita muscaria, and lysergic acid diethylamide, that's what. Same thing I'm playing with :) Micro$quash, however, is probably playing with alcohol, which would explain the confusing nature of their programs, the braggish boastfulness of the company, and the fact...

    x86 Binary with 10.0.1 Update

actually, i'm sitting, but thanks for the info. i'll have to try man page when i get back to my X box (oh god .... i can say i have an X box .... don't know whether i'm happy... or sad.)

    x86 Binary with 10.0.1 Update

a FAT binary is one that runs on 68K and PowerPC, right? Why would that explain a reference to the intel platform?

    Menu Blinking

I figured it out - the one part of the UI that makes OS X feel slow sometimes, and I can't believe it never occured to me sooner. I hate menu blinking. At this point, I think I know what I chose. And if I missed it, I'll soon find out. This is a chance I'm willing to take. So I turn off...
