No, I didn't delete the webloc files, because they are harmless. However, a deeper search led me to an OmniGroup plist file, located in ~/Library/Launch Agents, that I think may have been the culprit. I removed it and restarted, and that appears to have stopped the phantom process from running...

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I wasn't clear: There's nothing executable on my machine, bearing the name OmniFocus or OmniGroup. I deleted all of it, months and months ago. (All that's left are webloc files and text documents.) But obviously some kind of process is being run, over and over...

Several months ago, while using the public beta of OmniFocus (and long before the iPhone SDK existed), OmniGroup toyed with an OF web interface. I tried it once or twice, but never used it again. Eventually I stopped using OF, all together, but.... Tonight I needed to look into my system.log...

Thanks for the reply. I'm a bit confused, though, because it seems you may not have read my entire post. :-) I mentioned that when this happens, restarting my machine (or logging out and back in) fixes the problem 100% of the time -- and I typically don't see the problem again for weeks...

This probably isn't the answer you want, but the new multi-reader i bought was like $20. You'll spend more than the equivalent of that much in time, searching for drivers. IMHO, at that price, it's so much easier to just buy a new reader and move on. :-)

It was the driver. A reattempt to mount that drive (CF card) produced an error message, stating that "this extension cannot be used... Please reinstall or check for an update from the developer." In the meantime, I just bought a newer multi-card reader, plugged it in, and it just worked, right...

Thanks for the great suggestion. I should have mentioned that I have TextEdit and Mail both set to Rich Text. Now -- even more -- you can see why this situation is such a mystery.

When I use Lucida Grande, size 12, in TextEdit, and when I underline any text, the underline itself is "blurry" (which drives me nuts). But if I copy and paste that same text into Mail.app (same font), the underlines are clean and sharp! (See attached screenshots.) I'm assuming this has...
