Does reinstall erase applications or just overlay the OS ?

The directions on creating a bootable installer is no longer valid. Searching for High Sierra displays only a Connect my Tablet app. The links in the article go to iTunes not the App Store and no High Sierra can be found there.

I did check and just tried again after your reply, but there are only a very few photos there. They are only some of the ones the Photos application on my Mac show. In any case I was looking for photos that I still keep in iPhoto.

Nothing has happened for months, except automatic updates from Apple. I didn't tried the SMC reset because the explanation given in the SMC reset article seemed to imply that it wouldn't apply in my case.

For me 'quite some time' in one or two cases was about 5 minutes. Other times it is 30 secs to around a minute. I only posted this question because before this happened, (about three weeks ago) the wake-up was almost immediate.
