Apple burns faithful for $1 per iPod

Not really true. Windows includes drivers for the more common chipsets in the default install and has had Firewire networking for a long time. If MS were shunning Firewire I hardly think they would go to the effort of implementing FW networking. It is not something most Windows users would...

Apple burns faithful for $1 per iPod

USB2 Has a higher theoretical transfer rate, but this does not play out as you would expect for hard drives. First USB2 drives are not as good for sustained transfer. Secondly the USB disk driver for Mac leaves a bit to be desired. http://www.barefeats.com/usb2.html With a little...

    Torrent Lawsuit

I realize this is somewhat old news but since it just resurfaced I am curious as to what the astute readers here make of this lawsuit. I must confess I am of mixed feelings on it. On the one hand Apple needs to protect their interests and make a point that things like torrenting the private...

Little Snitch keeps alerting me! What is NMDB?

It is likely an infected PC scanning for other boxes to infect. Port 1025 is a well known vector for a Windows based worm whose name is escaping me at the moment. If you have a firewall external to your Mac try blocking ports 1025-1031 for everything outside the local subnet. The problem...

    Faking a MAC adress

Not that it matters but changing your MAC in and of itself is not particularly useful when hacking. It is only useful in conjunction with other techniques that anyone who needs to ask about how to change the MAC would not know or if they did it is likely they would botch the hacking attempt...

    A rather negative article

I might also point out that he seems to be a Mac OS 9 user not just a Windows user. So it is not just a case of expecting XP and not getting it.

    A rather negative article

While he may be nitpicking he does have some valid points. There are certain things in Mac OS X that could be improved. #3 does not bother me but I can see why it would bother some. #6 is true. I have it set to autoadjust but I remember the pain of trying to set the time by hand. Why...

How necessary is it to reserve 15% disk space?

I read it yesterday when you first posted it, then did further research to corroborate the statements. I saw the comments to the effect that HFS suffered from the same problems but saw little backing that up elsewhere. Given the average Apple user's use of voodoo mechanics to diagnose errors I...

How necessary is it to reserve 15% disk space?

RacerX is it a problem on HFS as well or just HFS+? Does Apple admit to this problem? Is the root cause known? i.e. is it the autodefragging as an example. It baffles the imagination that a problem of this nature has existed for years without correction or at least a safety net to prevent...

    How do you undo THIS???

So would it reflect badly on the OS or on the Administrator? Futhermore if you are doing, conservatively, ten million dollars a year through your website don't you think you would have clustering or at the very least failover? I agree that it could be worded better but it would take a truly...

    How do you undo THIS???

Technically unless you do a "shutdown -r now" it is undoable. Shutdown on Mac OS x has a 120 second delay. Even then depending on how you look at it the process of rebooting is "undoing" the action. The state of the computer, assuming the reboot is successful, is brought back to the...

Newest known Tiger build: Mac OS X 10.4.3 8F8

As a counterpoint I do not care if it is French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Fharsi, or Pig-Latin. Calling it "Hello" regardless of language does not seem like a meaningful moniker for an adhoc networking protocol. It is designed as a localized peer networking solution so how does "Bonjour"...

Newest known Tiger build: Mac OS X 10.4.3 8F8

Personally I will call it OpenTalk or ZeroConf. There were even a few articles out on ADC where they called it OpenTalk, I do not get why they changed it. Bonjour just does not cut it for me. I can't even see the benefit from a marketing perspective to a normal user, but then again I am not in...

    Mac Mini is almost interesting

You can open most tray loading drives with a paper clip. CDs getting stuck are not common anymore, you might as well worry about getting struck by a meteor. As the drive gets old (5-6 years) the loader may fail, but if that happens you will need to replace the drive anyway.

    Mac Mini is almost interesting

True. If you have an HDTV with firewire though it can play through that quite well. The best bet for HDTV in the mini would be a breakout box to handle the decoding or for a future revision to include a hardware decoder.

    Mac Mini is almost interesting

On a "budget" home system? That makes no sense. Even HDTV would not saturate a single 100mbit port. Maybe for second or third generation Mac minis but not the first release. The reason for the delay has nothing to do with maturity of the product but more to do with a potential shift in the...

Newest known Tiger build: Mac OS X 10.4.3 8F8

Yes Apple changed the name as part of a trademark dispute agreement. I find it slightly disingenuous though since JXTA has used the term rendezvous for their peer points longer than Apple and is still using it. Bonjour was chosen because a computer using zero conf networking services says...

    New Powerbook end of June

The average product lifecycle for the powerbook is 185 days. 6-9 months leaning towards the high end of the scale is a reasonable expectation. So a new PB by end of June (5 months after the last PB release) is unlikely but not an unreasonable question. Aug-Oct is more likely but still not a...
