No, don't. Look at what barhar said and boot up from your installer cd and get disk utility at work. Hopefully it's able to repair the stuff so you don't have to do a re-install.

When you say you have a 'Home' account I assume you work with more accounts and you normally use your e-mail in another account.Maybe you were still in that home account when you opened your Mail. Maybe switching to the account you normally use helps. It's the only logical reason I can think off.

Did you look in Users: Library: Mail and then the map that has your email address, click the icon inbox.mbox and look if it's still filled. When it's empty, you've deleted it during the accident and will never see it again. If the old stuff still is available, you might try to re-install mail...
