    No, don't. Look at what barhar said and boot up from your installer cd and get disk utility at work. Hopefully it's able to repair the stuff so you don't have to do a re-install.

    Current Mail disapeared...not lost just hiding somewhere

    When you say you have a 'Home' account I assume you work with more accounts and you normally use your e-mail in another account.Maybe you were still in that home account when you opened your Mail. Maybe switching to the account you normally use helps. It's the only logical reason I can think off.

    QuickTime Codec's

    Indeed, VLC is a great player, but if you also want to be able to play wmv or asf files on the same player, MPlayer OS X 2 is the best.
