    How to change hostname?

I'm away from my Mac right now, but look at netinfo (nidump & niload). OS X, like NextStep before it, stores lots of the unix flatfile stuff (like /etc/passwd, etc) in netinfo and distributes it from there. Tyler

    mysql dead (mysql.sock missing)

If you decide not to have mysql start up automatically when you reboot, a better way to start it is.... % safe_mysqld & Which will start mysqld as a background process -- leaving your terminal window available for other commands. Tyler

    Keyboard opinion poll

I really like the new mouse, but I have trouble with the new keyboard. There is something "wrong" or "different" with the tactile response of the keys that causes me to not get some keys completely pressed when I type on it. Probably just something I need to get used to. Tyler

    Development tool install problem

Okay, I finally figured out how to read the "bill of material" (.bom) files on OS X. /usr/bin/lsbom will list the contents of the .bom file. So from a terminal window, the following line will list out everything that was included in the developer package. lsbom...

    Development tool install problem

Look in the root directory and you will see a Developer folder. The most interesting stuff is in there (ProjectBuilder, InterfaceBuilder, etc). There are various other things (compilers, headers, libraries, et al) scattered all over the rest of your hard drive. The bom (bill of materials)...

    installing downloaded dev tools

I haven't successfully loaded the developer tools but "bom" is "bill of materials". It's yet another hold over concept from NeXTStep. It's just a listing of everything that's in the package.
