    Missing Spotlight Comments

I have what strikes me as a bizarre, inconsistent, yet hair-pullingly frustrating problem with the Spotlight Comments field that pops up in a file's Get Info window. Specifically, a project I like to plink around on is plowing through the archives of the Astronomy Picture of the Day website...

1.0 Release Candidate 1: Bug Reporting

Downloaded and installed the Help.app over the Thanksgiving weekend. Ran into some problems - three, exactly: 1. When I tried to submit a ticket, I got this response: curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'of' curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'the' curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'screen.'...

MS Word v. X Work Menu Mishap

I use MS Word v. X nearly everyday. I find its Work menu a handy way to shelve documents I work on frequently, though what documents those are change from week to week and month to month. Previously, I was able to add or delete documents to the Work menu, but no more. At least, I can add them...

    Safari Sluggish, Inconsistent

Bobw, mdnky, others - thank you for your ongoing suggestions. I have some IRL responsibilities that I must attend to for the time being, and it will probably be afew days until I can get back to trying to fix Safari. But I wanted to acknowledge your hanging with me in the meantime - thank you!

    Safari Sluggish, Inconsistent

I was afraid someone was going to suggest reinstalling Safari. And, I hate saying this, but I followed your directions to the letter, and the result is the same. Most web pages either take forever to load, or don't load at all. Safari still quits unexpectedly, like when I have two tabs open...

    Safari Sluggish, Inconsistent

Thanks for enagaging me again. I tried using Safari under a different user account and got similar results: pages take forever to load (in fact, the "gearhead" never stops spinning); graphics are often missing; Safari often "unexpectedly" quits, etc. But Firefox was working fine. What is...

    Safari Sluggish, Inconsistent

Thanks for all your quick replies! I downloaded Onyx and tried all the fixes you suggested, Bob. Restarted, same symptoms. Deleted all the same things via Onyx again; restarted; same symptoms. (For example, test web pages took at least 2x as long to load on Safari as compared to...

    Safari Sluggish, Inconsistent

About 2 days ago, Safari turned from my favorite web browser to absolutely unusable. I have no idea why. Here are my current symptoms: * Safari will not open any of my bookmarks correctly. It just hangs...and hangs. * Overall performance sluggish. For example, this URL...

iBook won't go to sleep properly

Dark Shadow, I just reset the PMU, and things seem to be back to normal (i.e., my iBook happily sleeps with the AC plugged in). Thanks! BTW, resetting the PMU did not seem to upset my clock - it was still showing the right time. Go figure. Also, I will likely have to reformat my HD anyway...

iBook won't go to sleep properly

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. Arden, choosing sleep from the Apple menu, then closing the lid, results in the same symptoms. That is, it cycles between sleep (blinking LED) and non-sleep (screen comes on, optical drive spins). Update: The sound is NOT my hard drive... After posting...

iBook won't go to sleep properly

Just a day or two ago, seemingly out of nowhere, my iBook started to refuse to go to sleep properly. That is, it will not go to sleep properly when I close the lid. It will sleep nicely when I select 'Sleep' from the Apple menu, but as I'm carrying the 'Book around all the time, I really really...

    Playlist: Downloads...Um, how?

Thanks, Timmargh and Fryke, for your replies. Here's what I've found: Fryke, apparently you have a different version of Safari than I do. Perhaps your version's "Open with iTunes" actually downoads and adds to the Library the selected file. My version (1.0.3 running on OS 10.2.8) only...

    Playlist: Downloads...Um, how?

Okay, this has nothing to do with Mac OS X at all. Just a website navigation question that I'm sure, when you immediately tell me the answer, will make me go, "D'oh!" So here's the question: When navigating to this URL... http://playlistmag.com/downloads/ ...how in the world do I actually...

Here, here! Thank you for your sound (pun unintended) logic, Natobasso! Now I hope that logic will influence values will influence desires will influence behavior. Or will the tail wag the dog?

    STORY: Freeipods.com Investigation Results

I'm not sure how many of the respondents after my first post actually have read the article I referred to. The point is kind of like the Golden Rule: Do unto others what you want them... You know the rest. It seems to me that if we were all really so upset about spam, shady marketing...

    STORY: Freeipods.com Investigation Results

Guys, Some years ago, as a young, unemployed and nearly unemployable college graduate, I was taken in by two different pyramid (ahem - 'network marketing') schemes. I lost a lot of friends (one of the few sources of capital, in the broadest sense, I had then), most of the little money I had...

    3rd-Party LCD Monitor Compatibility

I'm thinking of getting an LCD monitor to finally replace my CRT behemoth. Apple's are way outside of my consideration ($-wise) and, besides, they're all ADC (or now, DVI), and I need an analog connection for my trusty but 5-year old PowerMac (PCI Graphics). So, when shopping, do I need to...

Give me my free iTunes tunes back!

 Gasp! Groan! NOOOOOO! I was afraid you fellas would say something like that. Hmmm. IF those songs are on the OS 9 version of iTunes on the restore CDs, and IF they need to be installed, therefore, on a blank HD, THEN could I simply create a separate volume and "restore" those CDs...

Give me my free iTunes tunes back!

Way back when I first started using iTunes, it came with a bunch of free tunes (50? 100? 200?). But as part of some upgrade or another, I somehow deleted that initial Library. ARRGH! So my quest is to get those free iTunes tunes back. Can you help me? If your answer is, "They're on your...

    Migrating to OS X +

Just a note for all of you who may be intrigued by Bob's post: The correct web address is mactracker.ca, NOT mactracker.com, etc. You will then be directed to download the Mactracker application.
