    Network Boot for a Mac

I can think of two thing's. 1. DBAN is a secure wiping program for hard disks. It can be booted from a CD. There is a PowerPC port for it here: http://dban.sourceforge.net/ppc.html 2. Take the harddrives out and wipe them in Windows computers.

You're not an idiot. I'm glad that the solution worked out for you.

    Safari/Firefox won't display movies in-browser

You could try removing the VLC plugin. Just be sure to back it up in case you want to restore it.

    The MacBook is out

I bought a new car in 2002. All of the colors were the same price, except for the metallics, which were a few hundred more. I can tell you that the black, green, blue, red, and white models all cost the same amount of money. Only the silver cost more, because it was metallic. The average...

    The MacBook is out

Yes, the black MacBook does come with an extra 20GB of hdd space; however, the white ibook can be upgraded to the same hdd space for $50, making the price difference between the two $150, or 11%. If you buy a car that comes in Black and White, you shouldn't expect to have to pay 11% extra to...

    Safari/Firefox won't display movies in-browser

I'd look in the "Internet Plug-Ins Folder" and remove any references to Flip4Mac. Also, I'd try reinstalling Quicktime.

    spyware

I thought that Apple disabled the questionnable feature or allowed the user to turn it off. (I hardly ever use Itunes, so I am only vaguely familiar with the mini store).

    The MacBook is out

I agree with Yogi Bear! How crazy is it to charge (or pay) $150 more for the same laptop, in a different color? FYI: The black MacBook is $1499, and the comparable white MacBook is $1299. However, there is a difference in the hdd size. When you account for this difference by upgrading the...

    spyware

I have received a virus on Windows that blew right by my antivirus software ...' - yes, let us remained focused with respect to Macintosh security 'holes', etc. - This was relevant to the conversation, please do not take it out of context. At that time, someone, namely you, asked me about what...

    spyware

Yes, I have come across several security holes in operating systems. Here are two examples: A particular OS X security hole that I encountered was the piece of malicious software that was distributed on the macrumors forums a few months back. Someone linked to a piece of software that was...

    Powermac G3 B&W & Jaguar

They could be bad discs, or it could be that the iMac media don't work with the PowerMac. I'd suggest legally obtaining the G3 reinstall discs or a retail version of OS 9 or OS X.

    spyware

I'm not sure if your statement is true or not. However, very serious security holes exist in all major operating systems, so it is important to make sure that you always have the latest security updates installed.

Upgrading original Mac mini to Tiger

You have a good point about the RAM. I ran Tiger on my PPC mini with: 256MB: Ran like a dog 512MB: Ran great if you only had one or two applications open 1GB: Ran great all of the time. I bought my 1GB stick from newegg.com. I bought this one...

locked out of computer and i want to wipe it

Here is what I suggest. Call Apple and tell them that you have this notebook and that you do not have the original software for it. Ask them how much it would cost to purchase a new copy of the installation DVD's. It probably will not be that much. You can also look on ebay for the...

Upgrading original Mac mini to Tiger

I had the EXACT same problem. I bought a mini with Panther, and it came with a Tiger upgrade disk, which gave me the message that you are getting. Apparently, some of the Tiger disks just don't work with the Mini. So, I called Apple and they sent me a new disk, free of charge.

    Harddrive icon gone

You can also try this. Click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Go on the Finder bar (at the top of the screen.) Then select Computer from the list of options. Your hard drive should appear in the Window that opens. Try dragging it to the desktop. Let us know what happens.

Someone had the same problem as you and posted a thread about it on Apple's board. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa;jsessionid=ajqA8SpSQX2bdBE04S?messageID=1454695&#1454695

    iMac slower and slower

I have had similar problems with WinTel machines, and it usually turns out to be a dying hard drive (one time it was the hdd controller that was going up). I might suggest trying to isolate the hdd as the issues. If you have access to one, I would try replacing the internal hard drive and see...
