Applications question.

Hey, I was wondering if there's a way to get applications to run outside of the applications folder. I'm running OS X 10.3.4. Thanks for whatever help.
 
Just drag the file to the Desktop, etc. I think you would be better of using aliases of the programs.
 
Or, make a new folder, name it anything you like. Make aliases of any apps that you want quick access to, put them in that folder, drag it to the Dock. Now Right Click (or Control Click) on that folder to the app you want.
 
I general it shouldn't be a problem to move applications, unless there is some PATH hardcoded into the applications.

I have and Applications ( I could have used more or less any any other name) folders on other disks (as well as the Applications folde in root on the system disk), disk called VIDEO (so its had video atec apps) and a disk called AUDIO which has sound related applications.

So far I've not had an applications failure. Although I tend to leave the original Apple Applications where they were installed, I have moved iDVD to another disk and that works.

The reason I do this is so that a System, stored on a 10GB disk, can be cloned in an acceptable amount of time.
 
Well maybe my question is can I change a folder's properties to allow applications, usually ones that only run in the Application folder, to be able to run in another folder?
 
An application will run just fine anywhere on your system, but I would highly recommend leaving them in the Applications folder (or in their default install location) -- especially any Apple-branded applications. When a software update is released for an Apple application, it's going to expect to find it in the Applications folder, and unexpected things can happen if it doesn't find it there -- the application can become "broken" since some updated files will be installed in the Applications folder, even though the application has been moved elsewhere...
 
For some reason, my applications do not run unless they are in the Applications folder. I would execute a program and it will appear on the dock only to disappear a moment later. Any ideas?
 
Are these apps just the Apple-supplied apps (iTunes, iMovie, etc) or all other 3rd party apps that you have added to the system?
2nd question: Why do you want to move any apps out of the original installed locations, when use of an alias will allow you to launch apps from any other folder? The system should not PREVENT you from using an app from most locations on your drive, but, as has been stated here already, some Apple apps (and other apps, too) should normally be left in their original installed locations for updating purposes.
 
It is a third party application such as Firefox, and I don't want other users to see the applications in the Applications folder.
 
Also, as a side note, you don't have to move the application in order to prevent others from using it -- simply set access limits on the other users via the "Accounts" pane of the System Preferences. You can limit the applications that other users can use there.
