computer wont shut down

Talk about good software. Leopard is so good it wont shut down. literally. I have a new intel Mac5 about a year old.

I have to press the power button to shut down every time. I have archived and install over 3 times now. Shut down all my third party stuff. Have the latest update.

I've heard that it doesn't hurt the computer to shut it down manually with the power button until I can come up with a fix.

I have 4 Lacie external drives and 2 burners pulling. but I've had them since my old PC G5. this not shutting down has just started in the last 2 weeks.

any suggestion would be "greatly" appreciated.
i will wash your dishes for 4 years every other weekend (twice) when the eclipse of the moon is seen by 56% of the human population under 13. thanks

When you try to shutdown have the Console log (/Applications/Utilities/Console) open and the problem will write to the log. This way you will be able to trace down what is preventing the Mac to shutdown.

It looks like something's weird with your Epson inkjet drivers.

Have you checked Epson's site to see if they have updated drivers?

Try reinstalling your Epson software. Make sure that you check at the Epson web site to verify that your Epson software is up-to-date.

Which Epson printer do you have now?

Also, you could try running your Apple hardware test. It's available to you when you restart, while holding the letter D (for Diagnostics, eh?)

Are those external drives and burners ALL connected through FireWire, or are some USB? Are you using any external USB hubs?

I have an epson R280 but I only plug it in when I need to use it.

I have 2 Lacie 500's piggybacked with Firewire 800.
and 2- Lacie 500G hooked through firewire 400.
But I can eject them before I try to shut down.

I'm also networked with 2 other Macs and a PC.

It seems to work fine until after its been running for about 5 or 6 hours.
Then applications don't seem to function, act wierd and the finder wont quit so it can shut down.

I've added 2G ram to an existing 2g, but it has been working fine for about 3 months.

A hardware testing disc did not come my purchase last summer of a G-5 intel 2X2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. (boy what a mouthful). should it have?

thanks

A hardware testing disc always comes with the Macs - it should say 'Apple Hardware Test' or AHT on it, and it should be disc 1 of the install disc. Hold D down at boot and it will get there.

As ElDiablo mentioned, those driver errors are from the Epson drivers. Even when the printer isn't plugged in at that time, the driver is still installed and is called.

As your Epson software seems to be part of your issue, have you checked at Epson web site for up-to-date software for your printer?

Have you monitored your Activity Monitor utility for any apps or services that might be interfering with the shutdown process?

Finally, Macs that have been sold new for the last year, or maybe 1 1/2 years, have the hardware test already installed. Just restart while holding the letter D (for Diagnostics, eh?) - or insert your grey restore DVD #1, and do the same restart while holding the letter D. One of those procedures will open your hardware test.
