Hot Lion

Since I installed Lion on my MacBook Pro the machine has been getting very hot. I have upped the fan speed so I will see how it goes.

However I wonder whether the increased temperature may have something to do with the incredible slow speed my MacBook Pro is currently running since the Lion upgrade.

Programmes take four times as long to start up from the Dock and and the spinning pizza wheel seems to be present for an eternity.

I wonder whether a clean install of Lion would overcome this problem, but I am not sure how to do this seeing as it was downloaded from the App Store.

If you restart your MBP while pressing the Alt key you should see a Lion recovery option.
Using this you can format and reinstall Lion clean, just make sure to backup all your critical data.
Better still, clone your existing system to an external drive, then once you've done your clean install to your MBP you can use migration assistant to bring over all your settings, much quicker then doing it manually.

Check to see if Spotlight is indexing your drives.

On both of my computers (MacBook Air 11" and 2009 Mac mini), Spotlight ran for a considerable amount of time (~1 hour on the Air, ~3 hours on the Mac mini [with 5 external drives, mind you!]), all the while causing my fans to spin "out of control" and the temperature of the machine to rise beyond what I would consider "normal." Since Spotlight is VERY disk-intensive, I also experienced a general "sluggish" feel to both computers (not as noticeable on the Air due to the speedy SSD) and apps would take a long time to launch.

If your Spotlight icon in the upper-right has a dot in the middle of the magnifying glass, Spotlight is currently indexing one or more of your drives. You can click on this magnifying glass icon, and, if Spotlight is indexing, it will tell you so as well as give you a (very rough) estimate of the time remaining until its done.

After Spotlight was done doing its thing, both machines returned to normal.

No problem. I found that staying logged in and leaving the computer overnight to do its thing helped Spotlight to finish and now my computing experience is "complete."

This is what Apple states about re-installing:

Should you ever need to reinstall OS X, the Recovery HD includes everything you need to install a fresh copy of Lion. Choose Reinstall Mac OS X from the Utilities pane and a new copy of Lion will be downloaded and installed, preserving your existing data.

That's not quite what I want. I'd like to be able to clean install with everything deleted first (I have backed up all the files).

Is there a way to do this?

Yes there is, just re-read my earlier post, (the one you just quoted me from), and follow the suggestions.
This will allow you to format your HD and do a clean install, as mentioned in said post.

Unfortunately I still can't see how I can format the disc using this method. The only option seems to be to reinstall over what already exists (with all previous files preserved).

Believe me, I keep restarting my own computer while pressing the Alt key, just to make sure of my facts before I post.
So here we go again...
Startup while pressing the Alt key.
Select and click on the Lion Rescue icon.
At the very first bootup screen, select the last item, "Disk Utility".
From Disk Utility select your boot drive, then from the right side menu select "Erase"
Once done you can back out to the Lion install process and install to the newly erased drive.

As mentioned earlier make sure your backups are good.

Did you rename the Recovery HD? Or, is the name of that partition different in other countries? In the US, it's Recovery HD (At least, on my Mac!)

DeltaMac....
thank you for waking me up, all this time I've been referring to the wrong startup option, you mentioning the name discrepancy jarred me back to reality.
What I'm seeing at power on is a small Lion install partition that I created on a FW external drive from my original Lion dmg file.
So to Rhisiart, I'm sorry for the confusion and for misleading you, you can forget everything I said except maybe the bit about having good backups.

I held down the alt key and booted up from the recovery HD. I erased the hard drive via disc utility and then went to reinstall Lion. However only one HD was shown as available (i.e. the locked Recovery HD). In other words there was nothing to install Lion on.

So I reinstalled Snow Leopard, updated it and I am currently reinstalling Lion on top of it.

You can see that this is not what I really wanted, but I don't seem to have any choice.
