Macbook Pro problem... please help

Hello,

I'm new to macs and I'm very excited about owning one. I recently bought a 15" Macbook pro [late 2006 model (2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 120Gb HD, ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 2Gb RAM)] from a friend. He had 10.4 running which I believe is the Tiger OS?
My other friend gave me his "recovery CDs" which were 10.5.2 for his mac. Every time I tried to install it, it won't work. I've already tried the erase and install method and still it won't work.

Do I need to get the retail OS X CDs?
Can it be because of the ATI graphic card?
Can I run even run 10.5?

If someone could help answer these questions it'll be much appriciated.

Thanks

Your MacBook Pro will install and run OS X 10.5 just fine. I think you will find that the performance of your system will improve when you upgrade.

Your immediate problem is that the grey disks that you borrowed won't work on any Mac except the same model that it shipped with.
So, yes, you need the retail OS X disk, which is black label with a big "X" across that label.

When the disk is Grey that means it has been coded to that one Mac it was made for. You cannot move a grey software update disk to another computer. Plus you friend is crazy because that disk he gave you could be used on his Mac to do a HardWare Tests on his Mac.

Correct.

Basically, the restore CDs/DVDs that ship with new Mac computers are like the keys to the car -- they should follow the computer when the computer changes owners because they can only be used with that specific model of computer. One would not purchase a car and allow the former owner to keep the keys; similarly, one should not purchase a used Mac unless the seller was able to include the restore CDs/DVDs.

The restore CDs/DVDs won't do the previous owner any good after the computer has changed hands, anyway. My suggestion would be to contact the original seller and have them complete the purchase by including the restore CDs/DVDs that originally shipped with the Mac.
