OS X Time Machine Formatted my Portable Hard Disk - How do I recover?

I have a portable hard disk which I use on my Windows XP System. I have a Chinese friend who has a Mac Air and I plugged my Windows hard drive into his system thinking I could transfer some files to his system.

Time Machine 7.0 was running on his system. Some windows came up and I just clicked on one of the answers. It turns out I formatted my hard drive with a GUID Partition Table. Luckily I did not back up his system, so all my data is still on the disk, but my partition table is probably gone. I have some software which can rebuild Windows partition tables.

Can somebody familiar with both Windows XP and OS X clue me in as to what the best strategy would be to recover my data? I really do not want to lose the data on the hard drive and I am 100% sure that 99% of the data is still on the hard drive, I just need to find it.

If you could suggest any utilities to help in this process I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hiya mate,
There's a couple of utilities to do it with, Getdataback for NTFS was the one I used to use, and I found it to be great. GetDataBack for Fat is also available, just google them.

I have to say though mate, you really should read prompts that come up, especially if they come up when your hard disk is being inserted.

My ex girlfriend wondered for months why she was doing so much college work, and none of it was getting saved. That was until we made her stop when she closed MicroSoft Word, and read the bit that says "Do you want to save the changes?" LOL.

Anyways, hope this helps, and have a great day.

I use at home (on my windows 7 partition) is MacDrive. It has worked perfectly on my Windows 7 partition and even formatted Mac OS Extended external drives in Windows 7. In fact my Windows 7 now sees Mac OS Extended drives just like NTFS drives.

Chris do you by any chance know the settings I should use for Get Data Back? I actually have their software (purchased while saving a friend's data) but I tried it once with no results.

I am 100% positive the data is still on the hard drive. Thanks!

The data should still be on the hard drive, but the map is gone. With 1s and 0s all around the drive, until we get the partition map rebuilt the drive resembles Amazon warehouse with no systems at all to track what exists and where.

With Windows 7, there should be a recovery partition.
To access the System Recovery Environment in Windows 7, simply boot your PC, just before the system loads the Windows operating system; hit the [F8] Function 8 key on your keyboard which will launch the Advanced Boot Options menu. There you will see a new option 'Repair Your Computer', select this option and hit 'Enter' on your keyboard. - that may be able to repair the scheme.
