well, if it really appears to be broken (hardware level), then the only advice i have is a hope, i.e. that the disk is still under warranty -- had that happen as well and lacie simply replaced it without asking questions....
i've always found the following procedures very helpful in cases like this:
1. fsck: reboot your mac and press apple+s while the machine is booting -- this should boot your machine in single-user mode, a simple black screen with white text -- as soons as you get a prompt, type "fsck -y"...
as an answer to the first post: why don't you just connect your disk to the computer and your camera to the disk? then in FCP set your scratch disk for Capture, Render and so on to the external disk --
they seem to be blocking port 25 and since this is the standard SMTP port, there's not much you can do about it --
are you sure that using the company's SMTP server doesn't get you anywhere?
also: i suppose the ip address in your post, is one of your companies' -- first of all, i hope your...
have you tried using the domain name or ip of the proxy server as your smtp server? it's a bit hard to give suggestions without more info -- for instance, to be able to surf, did you have to change the proxy settings under System Preference/Network/Proxies? -- is your company running its own...

dont know any other way than this, but mind you it's not a very user friendly way -- from entourage i export the contacts in the only way possible -- this creates a "text" file -- this i import with palm desktop but make sure all the columns match -- then from palm desktop i export as v-cards...
just a thought about Apple Remote Desktop -- it's great software to use locally within a network, but over the internet it's not really good -- why don't you download the trial version of Timbuktu Pro and test that --
