    Resetting firmware password?

Removing the battery will not work since the password is stored in non-volatile RAM (NVRAM). If the machine has no extra RAM in it, add some, then reset the PRAM. It's a change in RAM configuration that proves to the firmware that you are in physical control of the machine. Chris

    Car Adapter Hack?

Before you cut and solder, try to find an adapter. I think somebody makes a plug adapter, I just can't remember who. Chris

    Moving between two wireless networks

When your computer wakes from sleep, give it a minute to detect the network on its own. It should connect automatically. Chris

    OS X on iPod?

This is just a nasty rumor. None of it is true. If the iPod couldn't run apps or there was a risk of voiding the warranty, Apple would have told us. Chris

Quit System Preferences, then delete ~/Library/com.apple.systempreferences.plist Next time you run System Preferences, everything should be OK. Chris

New PowerBook came with Old OS

I'm afraid you're stuck with whatever the machine shipped with. Resellers don't open boxes to update older machines with the latest software. Even Apple themselves don't update older machines. Nor do Windows resellers. You can't expect to buy a Windows machine and open the box to discover that...

How do I delete a network?

If by network, you mean you created a Network Port Configuration in the Network pane of System Preferences, then use the popup menu next to "show" to show "Network Port Configuration." Then you can click on the port configuration and delete it. If by created a network, you mean you created a...

    Safari Bookmarks: two thoughts

I see your point. But it still makes sense to me the way it is, because in iTunes and iPhoto it's obvious that there is a library. But in Safari, the user knows there isn't a library of bookmarks. By the way, you can make a library of bookmarks if you want to by keeping all of them in one...

    Safari Bookmarks: two thoughts

Sure it's possible. When you show all bookmarks, you'll see two plus signs at the bottom of the window, just like in iTunes and iPhoto. Click on the left plus sign and you'll get a new folder. Click on the right plus sign and you'll get a new bookmark. You can then type in the name and URL...

    Os X 10.2.4?

All of you who asked for multiple docks ought to check out F10 Launcher, from Chronos software. It's an launcher that's hidden, is brought up by hitting F10, covers the entire screen transparently, can open any app or doc from the keyboard by typing, is customizable, has multiple launch screens...

Article on what Apple may do in 2003

The new 17" Powerbook is the only one with the backlit keyboard. As for Firewire on the 12" I bet if we took a look inside, we'd find a lot in common with the iBook. I'd guess the next minor revision will have Firewire 800.

    Alt+Tab

Often, command-M will turn full screen games into regular windowed games. Then the normal Mac keyboard commands should work. Not all games do this, but some do. Chris

    New QuickTime won't work!!!

Jove, I did the same thing...I assumed it was 6.1, but it wasn't. I think Apple delays the release of the standalone installer to balance their server load. Chris

    The Dock

Urbansory...I don't think you need another user. Just turn off the "Remove from Dock" capability for your own username. Chris

    New QuickTime won't work!!!

Jove, when I last checked, the standalone installer on the Apple website was still version 6.0.2. Wait a few more days until they put 6.1 on the website, then run that update over your current installation. If you don't want to wait a few days, delete the package titled "QuickTimeSU.pkg" in...

    MATH/PHYSICS symbols in MS Word

Go to VersionTracker and search for a utility called "Popchar X". It's a little bit quicker to get to the special characters than OS X's palette. Another one is called "Pickchar" Try them and see if they're for you. Chris

    My Ibook Hates Osx!!!

If the computer will boot and run from the CD, then I would suspect a problem with the hard drive, not the PRAM, or battery. And since he can boot from the hard drive using OS 9, I would then be suspicious of the OS X installation on the hard drive. He said he reinstalled X, but didn't say...
