    itunes question ???

Just back all your itunes music files up onto CD or DVD, and also backup your itunes music database (the files labeled 'iTunes 4 Music Library' & 'iTunes Music Library.xml') in the folder called itunes in your music folder in your users' home directory. After reinstalling OSX, put the music...

FreeHand - upgrade to MX or stick with 10?

Hi Bob. I have mixed news for you. While Freehand MX (11) is less buggy than FH10, even better with the hard to find update, It's still a buggy app. Absolutely riddled with problems (eg: selecting the layers palette tab causes a crash about once every 2 days, or post-scripting to file causing...

Please help: OS9 to OSX file problems

A quick question. Did all of the files have file extensions? Many files will require these in OSX if they did not SPECIFICALLY have metadata descriptions attached to them in OS9. (I know this can be an issue with Quark and Word files).

SPECIFICALLY how does a sparseimage work?

For those of us that use the encrypted home directory function in OSX, or use resizable disc images, we are familiar with the sparseimage concept. Can anyone DETAIL fundamentally how this type of disc image works? How does it grow and shrink? Does it do so in real time, or is data cached...

PRINTING CROPS MY JOB & I"M HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS

Unfortunately everything but the distiller app was carbonised in the 5.05 update. Distiller still had to run in classic. Getting the right fonts activated in classic was a real pain. If you run an OSX only system, Acrobat 6.x is your only option, I'm afraid. Take it from someone who has...

    Software Update Log File

I have always found this irritating too, as I rarely use software update to download or install updates as I am on a dial-up connection on a phone line I must share with other flatmates. Hence I download the installer from Apple's site with a download client (especially the big combo updaters -...

how do I join together multiple 'real media' files?

Real has a native Mac OSX encoder/exporter available that may be able to fit your need. You need Quicktime Pro though. Link seems to be missing from Versiontracker and Macupdate now, but here's link I dug up. http://software-dl.real.com/free/Real_10_Export.dmg

    Protected PDF ?? -- workaround

You may accidentally have your Acrobat preferences set to save the PDF's you're creating for your larger publication with password protection. I'd suggest your first stop is your Acrobat preferences to see if this is set.

Limitations of Fast User Switching ??

Not sure what you are all having issue with regarding network access capability, as I can be logged in in another account, and web browsers and IM clients in different accounts keep working JUST FINE. Be aware that the Offline/disconnect thing in iChat is an APPLE imposed thing, not how it works...

OSX Native Indeo Video AVI Codec or player?

Quite right, now that you mention it it was an Intel codec. Thankfully we don't come on it that often, except via file-sharing networks.

OSX Native Indeo Video AVI Codec or player?

For those that can remember, back in the OS9.x days there was an extension for Quicktime that allowed Mac users to view AVI's that were encoded with IBM's Indeo Video Codec (IV50). Usually these files were created by Windows users. With the onset of OSX, the only way to play these files on an...

    Restricting Downloads

Currently I don't think you have this ability in Safari on OSX 10.3.x, but I believe I saw it as a new feature in the upcoming Tiger (OSX 10.4) Safari version, as a Safari preference. Of course, all one has to do to get around this is use a different browser (although you can lock that down too).

    Changing default apps

There is a small utility called ICSwitch that allows you to change default apps on the fly. It can live discreetly in the menu bar, or be run once, set and quit. Very handy.

    Video Card Upgrade Suggestions Please

The upgrade of a few hundred dollars for a new video card is worth it for me, considering I've only just finished paying off the NZ$8700 that my G4 and 19" monitor cost me 3 years ago (Macs are rather expensive here in New Zealand, thanks to double dipping during importation - first they come...

    Video Card Upgrade Suggestions Please

I'm playing Neverwinter Nights at the moment. As you all can see from my Signature Machine Spec, my current G4 733MHz Quicksilver tower is a little underpowered graphics card wise (it's the only real weak link for this game at the moment, as my CPU has no problems with the AI or anything else)...

"ripping" iphoto off of an install cd ???

I can also recommend Pacifist. I used it to extract the DVD player off the Panther install CDs when I installed a Combo drive (It's not installed if you don't have a DVD player at the time of installation). It will ask you to put in all the installation CDs when you are extracting stuff from an...
