    I wish...

While I suppose it would be nice to add windowshading for those folks that like it personally I think it is the most annoying feature I've ever seen. The main reason I waited until OSX was out to buy my Mac (my first one BTW) was that I found the windowshading feature so annoying. When I...

"bad disk" when rebooting from OSX to 9.1

No, haven't had to do that. In fact most of the time I never use Classic. When I do use it I usually quit it cleanly. It is possible however that logging out when Classic is running could cause the same problem, I will have to test it out.

"bad disk" when rebooting from OSX to 9.1

I have a problem when rebooting from OSX to 9.1. When starting 9.1 after shutting down from OSX after changing the startup disk Disk First Aid always detects a "bad disk" and proceeds to check the entire partition. No problems are every found an the boot continues normally but it gets tiresome...

Mac OS X on iMac DV 400?

Works fine for me on my iMac DV-SE 500 with 256mb of memory so it should work fine on your 400. I would recommend making sure you have at least 256mb if you want snappy performance however.

    Potential ibook consumers

I used to have a Sony VIAO and Sony allows up to, I think, 5 dead pixels before they consider a screen defective. Mine had 3 dead pixels and they would not do anything. Eventually a whole 100 pixel or so area of the screen went dead and at that point they finally replaced the screen. The...

Folder permissions change all by themselves (I swear!)

If a install program actually installs a program into your Applications folder it's possible that it may change the permissions of the folder in the process. This is a bug in the OSX install process and has been documented elsewhere in this forum. Programs that are installed by dragging and...

    Give me a BREAK

I have an iMac DV-SE 500 256mb and OSX runs just fine on it. Sometimes I am very surprised by just home much I can load it up without causing problems. I used to kill Classic as soon as I didn't need it but I can hardly tell it's there so most of the time I leave it running in the background...

    Sharity configuration problems

I was able to mount the share in the /Network/Cifs directory before but now I can't. Perhaps it worked ok when the Wintel box had one share but doesn't now that there are more than one? I will give your suggestion a try. By the way I forgot to post the error I am getting, it is reported as...

    Sharity configuration problems

I've been trying to get Sharity to network my iMac and my roommate's NT 4.0 PC and I have been having a lot of problems getting it to work right. Unfortunately the documentation and the user interface leave a lot to be desired. I downloaded the last beta version and after fiddling and...

    Disk image mount problem

No but I have a problem where the mount program hangs while trying to mount .dmg images. Force-quitting and re-mounting solves the problem but it's irritating.

Major Problems on an iMac SE DVD

I installed the firmware update on my DV-SE 500 with no problems. However just to be safe I rebooted into 9.1 first, installed the update and then rebooted 9.1 again. The update installed just fine. Were you in 9.1 when you installed the firmware update? Did you have your boot disk set to your...

    Mail.app hangs on startup

Looks like the problem doesn't occur if I select and view a message in the inbox before my new mail concludes downloading so now I am careful to do that. Oddly enough just as I discovered this my mac.com email address started crashing mail on startup. Had to delete the defaults for that...

    Keystrokes being lost

I moved my mouse from the keyboard USB port to the port on the iMac and it seems to have reduced the problem. My guess is that somehow daisy-chaining the keyboard and the mouse triggered the problem. Of course it could just be a coincidence, hard to say.

    Keystrokes being lost

I have a weird problem where keystrokes keep getting dropped while typing. I am wondering if others have seen this problem or whether perhaps there is a problem with my Pro keyboard. I have noticed that the Pro keyboard seems to require that the keys be striked harder and for longer than the...

    Mail.app hangs on startup

About 90% of the time Mail.app will hang on startup after it's initial fetch of mail. I get the downloading mail popup, the mail downloads, displays in the browser and I hear the "new mail" ping. However control never returns, I just get the spinning wheel of death. The text "fetching new mail"...

    Mail.app hangs after downloading mail

I am running OSX on a iMac DV-SE 500 The first time I run Mail.app after I start-up my Mac and connect to my ISP (via a 56k modem connection) it logs in and downloads from my server fine but 80-90% of the time once the messages are removed from the server I will then get the "spinning ball of...

    can't see my files

Another solution is to set your Downloads directory to ~yourusername/Library/Desktop. I did this in Omniweb and while I still sometimes can't see the downloaded file on the desktop at first a simple click on the background will reveal the file. Still not the ideal solution but it's simple and it...

Help with Mail - SMTP problems

I had this same problem too until I discovered that I had my incoming and outgoing email machines swapped (pop.foobar.com is my ISP's incoming mail server and mail.foobar.com is my outgoing) and that my ISP's POP server didn't support SMTP. What made it difficult to detect is that I could POP my...

    Lost outgoing mail

Looks like I had my incoming and outgoing mail machines backwards. Once I swapped them everything seems to be working ok. I'd still prefer some graphical indication that outbound mail was being sent and a little better assurance that mail can't be lost but overall it's working fine now.

    Lost outgoing mail

Machine: iMac DV-SE 500 Application: Apple Mail I've been having a problem with Apple Mail where some of my outgoing mail appears to be getting lost. Unfortunately the app doesn't give any real-time feedback on whether mail which gets sent is actually delivered. Sure sometimes I get an SMTP...
