    Sharing over iBook's built-in modem?

I've hooked up my old Windows98 to my iBook via ethernet cable and turned on the Windows sharing in OSX's prefs. Not great but I'm able to put precious files from here or there to here or there via ftp. Good. iBook has but one "real" ethernet port (RJ11 I think) and when I connect to the...

    color and redirection?

I've been messing around with 'ls -G' (directory with colour) and tried to redirect the output to a file and see if any colour info was retained. It didn't seem to. 'ls -G > file' 'cat file' Anybody know how to could keep the colour info, or if it's possible?

    Privoxy; from PPPoE to DHCP

Hi, I've moved and changed my Internet service provider from a PPPoE DSL to a cable modem DHCP connection. Pretty much the same grub except my Privoxy isn't working anymore. I have configured a proxy at 127.0.0.1, port 8118, as usual. And made sure that it has been started. Even with...

    Folders don't open, they reset

Yikes! No elegant solution to this? I've only been poking at my keyboard for half an hour now, but things look and feel okay today. Perhaps it fixed itself. I wonder exactly what programs run in the early morning (there must be somekind of cron file somewhere with that stuff). If all...

    Folders don't open, they reset

Yup, I'm Admin. Okay, I tried Disk Utility from OSX.3 Disk 1 a couple of times. Both the Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions. The Repair Disk reported no errors, but stated that the drive was repaired. It didn't fix it. :( --- I moved the file "??" from the "File Transfer...

    Folders don't open, they reset

I've got an annoying problem that won't let me go into most of my folders. When I try to open those folders, Finder seems to relaunch. It keeps doing the same thing with the same directories. It crashes with most folders that are nested 2 or 3 times in. But this pattern isn't constant...

    Perl and Camel Bones probs

I never used the Project Builder or the XCode builder before. After taking a close look at the errors, it seems to all come from a call in the main.m file. When the hash marks are removed from the include headers, there is but a single "error: Syntax error before '<' token". I think I'll...

    Perl and Camel Bones probs

I had Perl running fine with the terminal and thought it would be nice to experiment with a graphic interface and so downloaded Camel Bones. Welp, I got Camel Bones and tried the usual "Hello World" primer program to see if it would work. Sadly, I had over 70 parsing errors and stuff...

keyboard keymaps, xmodmap work for you?

    # xmodmap -e "keycode 74 = 6" does change my X keymap as shown with # xmodmap -pk | more which should correspond to my right arrow key mapped as number 6 (I'm messing around trying to make my arrow keys to work as directions would on a numeric keypad) Pressing the arrows there is no...

What does rc suffix stand for?

I suppose it's *something* configuration, eh?

    system file mapping

Aha. I assume you meant ctrl+click to peer into the package. I get it. Macs just continue to impress me. Oh, I had to drag the desired file onto the HexEditor icon in the doc to edit it. That's not a problem (I haven't tried a save yet, but assume it'll work fine).

    system file mapping

That editor doesn't want to open .app files. Is there a trick? I like the other stuff on that site too. esp. the voice command thing. The plastic surgery one is just creepy.

    Attaining the Crossfire package.

Hmm. This game looks neat. I see it listed on the Fink site. However, when I try to find it as a package it's not around. What's up? I've updated the package list and scanned through it. Nothing. 62 games packages listed in Fink Commander and 18 listed in dselect - what's up with that...

    system file mapping

If that's the newest Toolkit available on 10.3's retail package, then I've already got it installed. A search doesn't find anything for "hexedit". Does it go by another name maybe? That metadata would be nice to know more about. A Google search doesn't yield much more than hard-core Apple...

    system file mapping

Cool, that is an essential peice of software I think (at least for learning, if not developing). Odd that something similar isn't included with the OSX package. I suppose there is some kind of default-icon mapping somewhere too. I make some brief observations: 'Get Info' on a .jpg file...

    system file mapping

I'm curious about how files are recocnized by the system too. Surely there must be somekind of registry somewhere that will tell Finder to open this file with that application, no? Sometimes files don't seem to have extensions, but are still recognized as specific types. It would be...

    Help for a Scratch Start

Guess what? After all my hair-pulling, I just click an application icon (xlincity in this case) and it works. Don't ask me why. Time to investigate... this is the stuff. I still think a startup intro for Open Source on OSX, without ifs and/or buts, needs to be written.

    Help for a Scratch Start

I remember setting up and using xwindows on Linux systems. It was hard. Now I'm trying to get my OSX10.3 to work with it - it's impossible. I would love to just simply see an Xwindow GUI. Quite frankly, I've lost my patients. Sorry if it sounds like I'm ranting. My nerves are a little...

    Hmm. What? X11 with 10.3

I'm back at trying to figure out X11 now and decided to install it from the OSX10.3 CD#3. The version number for X11 is 4.3.0. The Fink site says this: "10.3 users: You will need to install version 4.3.99.1-2 or later". So what's going on here? Is there a version number convention that I'm...
