    miss my old calculator

I haven't used 10.3's Calculator in so long, I've forgotten most of the new features. The one that I do remember is hex/dec/octal/binary conversions, which are useful if you're a programmer. I'd rather use 10.2's Calculator and use DOH for my hex/dec conversions on the rare occasion that I need...

    miss my old calculator

The calculator from 10.2 works just fine under 10.3. If you have access to a machine with 10.2.x installed, just copy the Calculator app to your 10.3 machine over the network and it should work just fine. If not, you can extract it from your 10.2 installation CDs using Pacifist (available at...

Safari my default browser already: and you?

I can't comment on Thai, but Safari handles Greek better than Chimera does.

Safari my default browser already: and you?

I used to use iCab as my main browser because of its speed and features/configurability. I resorted to IE for pages that wouldn't open in other programs, and OmniWeb for Unicode pages. Safari does Unicode (I can throw OmniWeb away), is compatible with all of the pages for which I used to resort...

    HELP! long delay in startup

Try going into System Preferences, open the Login pane, and then check under the login items tab. If you have a lot of items there, it explains at least part of the delay. All of those items in the list are being launched every time you log in (some of them perhaps in the background, without you...

    CD Copy Error -36 ARGH!!

I've started having this problem in the last two weeks, even though I never had any trouble before (regularly copying 400MB+ at once to CD-RW's). Whenever I try to copy more than about 80 MB to a mounted CD-RW, I get error -36. Even if I try to copy one folder at a time, I will usually get it...

    .keymapping files

Well, Apple still hasn't released a Greek keyboard layout for OS X, despite the fact that the system font (Lucida Grande) supports Greek. I guess that I'll have to program one myself. Problem is, I haven't been able to find any documentation for .keymapping files. Does anyone know how to...

    Samba server (smbd/nmbd) problems

I've had a similar problem. When I first set up Samba X 2.2.1a, I couldn't get it to work: the share wouldn't appear in the Network Neighborhood on the Windows machine. I didn't have time to troubleshoot. When I upgraded to 2.2.2 about a week later, everything suddenly worked, so I figured...

    Zombies

When doing ps -acx, I noticed a bunch of processes that should have been long dead (including cp and mv processes), marked with status "Z". I can see from the ps man pages that Z means zombie, but I can't find any explanation of how a zombie process differs from any other dead process. 1)...

    Its Back. (ppp issues)

Forget the previous posts about the ppp.log... My recent log-ins have been fine without a lockup, and the CCL stuff is still in the log. I have no ideda why sometimes it logs the CCL stuff, and sometimes it doesn't. My past 4 or 5 logins, it has done so; before that, there were 20 or so...

    Its Back. (ppp issues)

Well, let's see if we can narrow this problem down... 1) Is there anyone using modem dial-ups on OS X who has NOT experienced this problem? If so, perhaps the problem is specific to certain hardware. What kind of hardware are people who have/don't have the problem using? I have an iBook...

    Its Back. (ppp issues)

Following up on gigi's post, I checked my ppp.log file after the latest lockup. The log had the following in it after the termination of the previous connection: CCLWrite : +++ CCLWrite : ATH\13 CCLMatched : OK\13\10 CCLWrite : AT&F\13 CCLMatched : OK\13\10 Serial link disconnected...

    Its Back. (ppp issues)

I always keep "automatically connect to Internet" off, and I still have the problem. I don't think that opening Internet Connect instead of using the menu bar connect makes any difference. I always used Internet Connect under 10.0.4 and still had the problem.

    Invisible files

Files beginning with a period are invisible from the GUI, just as they are in Unix... However, some files that do NOT begin with a period also are invisible in the GUI. I'm assuming that Apple has some invisibility parameter carried over from OS 9. How do you set/unset this parameter from...

    Its Back. (ppp issues)

I'm still having this problem in 10.1, too. Once, when I tried to dial-up immediately after logging in to OS X from the login window, it locked up my system for 5 minutes and locked it up so completely, the spinning beach ball stopped spinning. I ended up restarting (and ruining a long...

    SMB/Samba

Now I remember why I use Macs... Turns out that it was a hardware problem. I went through the disk that came with the Ethernet card and it had a diagnostic program (which, of course, you had to run from MS-DOS, not from Windows!). I ran the diagnostic and it froze. I called the...

    SMB/Samba

I'm using a 2001 iBook. From the iBook Developer Note, May 2001, page 37: "When connecting two computers using Ethernet, a crossover cable is not required; circuits in the PHY detect the type of connection and switch the signal configuration as required." I've succesfully connected the...

    SMB/Samba

OK...now that I understand that SMB runs over TCP/IP, we're getting someplace...but still no cigar. Here's how things are configured: Mac OS X Network preferences Show: Built-in Ethernet Configure: Manually IP: 192.168.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Router: none DNS: none Search domains...

    SMB/Samba

I'm aware of ping...but what address do I ping? I have no idea what the Windows box's TCP/IP address is. Does it even get a TCP/IP address when using SMB? Does SMB require TCP/IP? Are SMB packets enveloped in TCP/IP packets? I assume that I have to enter a dummy IP address in the Windows...

    SMB/Samba

I have 10.1 installed on my 2001 iBook, along with Samba and the Samba Server Config Tool (SSCT). I should be able to share files and browse shares on SMB networks, right? I bought an Ethernet card for my Windows box at work today so I could hook up my iBook to the Windows box. I connected...
