If you can boot from another drive try moving the preferences folder out of home/library/. If you can't boot from another drive, I'd suggest safe mode and moving the directory, but since that is not working for you, it might not work.

I might have the solution... I believe your issue to be this: System boots to desktop, and you can see the background image, but nothing on the desktop, no menu bar, no dock, and some of the menu extras still appear in the upper right corner. If this is the case, I have seen this problem...

FileVault takes your entire home directory and encrypts it into a sparse disk image. Individual files are not encrypted. You can double click the disk image belonging to some other user and mount it if you know the password.

To bring us back to the original purpose of this thread, I completely agree that brushed metal has no purpose in the Finder. It is ugly, obtrusive, and breaks the consistency of OS X's UI. If Apple wants BM in some of it's apps, that's fine. I agree that it does work in apps that interface...
