    Cheapest source for AppleCare

I've seen them on ebay.co.uk for £99, that's a bit less than $200 or so.

    Refresh Finder Icon?

How do I refresh the icons in a Finder window in Icon View? I have a gif file and the icon is the file as it was before I changed it - how do I get it to update?

    Yahoo! OUTRAGE!!!

I use Adium, and I've recently dumped Yahoo Mail in favour of Google Mail, because the latter is faster, has more features and isn't riddled with bugs. Yahoo also have a habit of kicking FireFox users off the new Yahoo Mail for seemingly random reasons, I can't really be bothered with Yahoo at all.

Boot Camp really that bad for my mac?

There's a lot of nonsense like this around - I read last night how there were 78,000 viruses released for Mac OS last year and we should all move to Linux.

    Vista, the osx wanna be....?

Not strictly true. Whenever I do this, the drive is almost always still being accessed by Windows, so I get a message to click up in the middle of the screen reporting that fact. So I go all the way up there to click OK just to start again. Anyone with half a brain who actually USED the...

    Vista, the osx wanna be....?

Here's one - I completely agree with this. Windows is intrusive, counter-intuitive and slows the user down. Everything from unzipping a file to plugging in a USB device is slowed down excessively for no real purpose or benefit. A Wizard to unzip a file? Whoever does MS's user interaction...

    switching windows

As well as annoying it can cause problems with Alt+Tab switching, clicking on certain windows, and pop-up hints staying visible even when their app is not focused. It's the sort of low-level thing they should have got right after 12 years... Hah. I'm the other way round! :P

    10.4.9 in Software Update

Mine restarted without the usual pause, but next time I powered it down it lost the bluetooth mouse after it paired with it when it restarted; pairing it again got it back without problems. I usually have to pair it again when I power off anyway.

    switching windows

Taskbar is pants. It can easily lose track of which application is active with certain programs - Paint Shop Pro can be active while another task is selected on the bar. Getting that wrong is a pretty fundamental error, and the fact that you can't rearrange them is pretty poor too (unless...

    Adobe Illustrator on Parallels

Not very helpful messages. I wonder if Illustrator is doing something technical that Parallels can't handle? Have you tried on the Parallels support forum? (forum.parallels.com) - someone might have had the same issue.

    Vista, the osx wanna be....?

What, so plugging security holes is a bad thing? I really don't see what you're on about... I've read that on a 1Gb machine, Vista is substantially slower than XP on the same machine. And a heavily-used XP is bad enough already. Rendering a less-than-one-year-old PC as obsolete isn't...

    my bluetooth mouse.

Did you try pairing it with something other than "Mouse" as the device? There's an "other device" option, isn't there? Perhaps that will let you specify the passkey. You might even get it to pair as a keyboard, my iMac thinks my Logitech mouse is a keyboard.

    Adobe Illustrator on Parallels

What does it say when you try and save? It might be a permissions problem, something similar cropped up recently with Corel Draw files.

    Vista, the osx wanna be....?

MS have been copying Apple for years, a lot longer than Apple were copying Xerox. Then again the original Amiga OS looked very much like a coloured version of Mac OS, they're all at it. As I see it, Microsoft innovate NOTHING, despite what Bill Gates says. I'm done with Microsoft for home...

What's so great about macs? Why are they better than PCs?

I agree with Wolf_pack, I can see Vista being a huge disaster. I decided a while back to avoid it completely, and not just because it's ugly. There are two reasons I prefer MacOS to Windows - Windows is too intrusive, and Mac just works.

    AppleCare and Dead Pixels

I have a shiny new MacBook on it's way, but I've been advised that it has a single dead pixel near one corner. Is this covered by AppleCare? I know the warranty only covers a certain number of pixels, but does APP cover just one?

    Movement freezes my iBook G4

The faulty board may have caused the hard drive failure, or even vice versa.

Parallels with USB-attached PC-drive with Windows

Yes, trying to boot the same Windows partition within two different hardware configurations will go tits-up. At the very least, Windows will reboot automatically each time you start it up under a new setup, as it has to swap some low-level drivers around when the motherboard changes, but it's...

Brand new switcher.. how to remove word alias?

If you drag an icon with, I think, Command and Ctrl held down, it will create an alias at the location you drop it and I'm fairly certain it'll lose the "alias" off the end.

    Apple/Microsoft....My Prediction

Leaving the xenophobic slant aside, Microsoft's practices are blatantly anti-competitive - the EU is just pointing it out, just as the US government did. Microsoft's business model seems to be wait until something useful or innovative appears (say, Java, iPod), make a poor-quality derivative...
