    Mac OS X Speed

Find a fan that you can use to push air through it, just to see if it is heat causing your problem. I think something else is wrong, as I stated the heat output from that drive cannot be that much greater than a 5400 rpm drive. My iMac was running fine, and it was 95 degrees in this room on...

install SAMBA, then you can use OSX, OS9 to mount linux shares. get samba here and install on your linux box. use smb which is native in OS X to mount. not perfect, but it works! use smb://machinename/sharename in connect to server in OS X

Macs never do this, but PC's do it all the time

No scsi interface in my cube. I don't have a 603 or 604 PPC, except in my basement. Still cannot find the Intel parts, nor AMD. I was installing Novell when you were just getting started in school, dude… LOL I know Apple didn't make all the parts in my Macintosh. I enjoyed the history lesson...

Macs never do this, but PC's do it all the time

So since Macs are made of all the above, does it make them a PeeCee? I cannot locate any AMD components in my Mac, nor Intel. Can you enlighten me where these company's parts are in our Macs? BTW, I do think the problem is related to M$, since most PC's run M$ OSes. As far as setting up a...

Macs never do this, but PC's do it all the time

I would bet they have an optical mouse, and then maybe not. A hair, piece of dirt in an Apple Pro mouse can have profound effects causing the cursor to jump, or drift erratically. An irregular reflective surface is havoc too for opticals. I have seen many Win2k computers with a regular PS2 M$...

saving as .pdf in any OS X app? How?

I was referring to the PDF save function of OS X and wishing it had the functionality of Acrobat. However, that wasn't apparent in my post.

saving as .pdf in any OS X app? How?

I learn something new everyday! Thanks for that tip onan. Hypernate: Adobe Acrobat still has a lot of functionality in creating PDFs that you cannot do with just saving as a PDF file in OS X. Creating hyperlinks is just one I would like to see.

Please help before hd gets formatted!

That has never been the case for me, and I have a lot of stuff running. Most processes will go into sleep and consume very little CPU%. I would run top in terminal and see what the cpu idle % is.

    Slow boot ups... why?

Well my boot times are not really affected by the ethernet interface, but I have never used a dialup connection with OSX. When a modem connection is used, OS X does not try to connect at boot time, so boot times will be slightly longer ( a second or two) with an ethernet interface. You may be...

    Slow boot ups... why?

When OS X is configured for an ethernet interface and it is not available, be prepared for a long wait. Unplug the cat5 cable, the dsl/cable modem or have a slow response to your ISP's DHCP or DNS server and expect the long boot times. Compare this to having X expect an immediate ethernet...

Opening Windows NT folder crashes Finder

MD, This is a known problem, one that I have never encountered on our NT 4(sp5)/Win 2k LAN, but many others have suffered from it. We abandoned SFM(services for Macintosh) from M$, as it never worked well. We use MacServerIP v7 from Cyan.de on Win2k server with 9.x and 10.1.x clients without...

    Office 2001 vs Office v.X - worth buying 2001?

Sorry, I didn't make it apparent in my post, but Office 2001 runs in classic as MDLarson pointed out. There are still some problems with Office X. I have had it crash a few times, as has 2001 in Classic. If all you need is the occasional ability to open a .doc or .xls, stick with 2001 or use...

    Office 2001 vs Office v.X - worth buying 2001?

I have both 2001 and X versions of Office. I prefer the X version, as I don't want to have to run classic. Feature wise, there are things in the newer version that don't exist in 2001. If you have the money, buy it, as I would hope you want to leave OS 9 in the past.

saving as .pdf in any OS X app? How?

It sure is a great feature, especially when you are out of paper or ink in your printer. Others use it to save as pdf, and print in Classic or OS9 because their printer isn't supported in X yet.

    Slow boot ups... why?

DNS problems, and DHCP as ladavacm suggested is your most likely cause. Open up console utility application, and view the messages and you will see something similar to this : Apr 1 20:09:57 localhost lookupd[212]: DNSAgent: dns_send_query_server - timeout for 24.48.33.2 I have had...

Quite fed up with this problem.

I never had any of the problems you are describing until I added a M$ optical USB scrolling mouse.I didn't add any software to support it. Also, at times, when waking the Mac, it caused several keys strokes to be made and when I move the mouse it quits. I put the regular Apple mouse back on and...

    OSX - A Slow Death?

If you are low on RAM, ie <256mb, you will sustain pageouts of memory to the swap file. Relocating the swap file to a different partition will marginally improve performance when switching apps or doing repetitive tasks. There are several classic apps, extensions and control panels in OS 9...

    nslookup strangeness

IP addresses in the 192.168.x.x are only used for internal non-routeable IPs in a private network. This address could only be used, I think if you have a local DNS server. If this is entered in your DNS, in the network prefs pane, remove it.

    A little word about profanity

While the use of profanity in every day situations may be the 'norm' to some of you, it is not for the 'not so normal' rest of us. We don't need to be known as a bunch of !@#@#$ idiots at MacOSX.com whose vernacular needs to be cleaned up for us to be taken seriously.
