    G5 can't find System folder

Okay, we got a Dual 2GHz G5 a few weeks ago and it was great until the HD failed. We put a new (blank) HD in it and now it will not boot from anything. I tried a Panther install CD, the original G5 Install CD, the G5 Hardware Test CD, an external Firewire drive (that works on other systems), and...

    iMac G5 testimonials?

Thanks for the link. The only negatives I've heard thus far are about some CDs/DVDs refusing to eject, but I've seen that behavior in a few TiBooks here on campus. Hopefully they developed a trouble-free product this time -- we've had a 30% failure rate with first generation eMacs and a lot of...

    iMac G5 testimonials?

I know that the iMac G5 has only been available for a short period of time, but has anyone heard of any negative quality issues? The college that I work at is about 40% Mac, 60% PC (in regards to faculty and staff), but there's been recent talk of pushing for more PCs because of financial...

Can't mount a SmartDisk FireLite HD in OS X

We have a 20GB SmartDisk FireLite HD that is recognized by Disk Utility, but it doesn't mount, doesn't show up on the desktop, nor is accessible via TechTool Deluxe. It seems to mount fine in OS 9, but it would be really nice to have it available in OS X again. A few days ago the drive worked...

    "Call Waiting" app?

I'm not sure what the real name is, but is there an OSX version of the Windows "Call Waiting" program available? I can't afford broadband at the moment but I'm getting tired of missing calls and such, and I know that a year or two ago there was a beta version available for OS9, but I'm not sure...

    Japanese characters?

Can anybody tell me just what this is? Mozilla crashed on me and then I noticed the smaller window near the bottom right corner of my screen (although I don't know if the two are related -- the window could have been there before Mozilla crashed). When I clicked on the button beneath the "blued"...

    Mail Signature

I found it very easy...I created a new signature in Preferences and dragged a graphic into the window. I even tested it to make sure and everything worked fine. BTW, you might want to only use GIFs or JPEGs as most other image formats are too large (filesize-wise).

    What browser should I use?

I use Mozilla (1.0) almost exclusively, mostly because of the tabbed browsing but also because it's about as standards-compliant as you can get (IE is tops for adhering to standards, though). The Omniweb interface looks nice but it doesn't support hardly any CSS and it's DOM support is...

    Adobe FDF files

I know how to create a PDF file in OS X, but is there a way (short of actually shelling out money to Adobe) to create an FDF (Forms Data Format) file? Thanks. Mike

    Fetch for MacOSX is here

If anyone is interested, Fetch 4.0 for MacOS X is now available at http://www.dartmouth.edu/pages/softdev/fetch.html .

    anyone get NeXbar to work?

I downloaded & installed NeXbar fine, but I can't add any apps to the dock. It should be really simple to do (drag app to dock & that's it), but it won't do it. I knnow that others have it working fine, because I've seen screen shots. Any ideas anybody? Thanks. Mike

    can't delete a locked file

After I installed OS X I decided to go through my other partitions & do a little spring cleaning. In all, I trashed over 400MB of crap, but one file has refused to be deleted (it's a locked file left over from the old 3Com ISDN modem I had). When I try to empty the trash I get the following...

    AddressBook

I can confirm that the dot remains after I save, but then it disappears moments after switching to a different record.

    can't tar/gnutar/gunzip!

Okay, so I'm an idiot... I figured out my problem -- the <Enter> key on my Powerbook doesn't work exactly the same as the <Return> key. If I hit <Return>, everything works just like it's supposed to. OTOH, if I hit <Enter>, it advances to the next line but doesn't process the command.

    AddressBook

The only problem that I've encountered with the Address Book is that if you enter anything in the "Work" section, then it puts parentheses & quotes around both Work & Home addresses. Other than that, I think that it's better than most address book apps that I've used...definitely looks better...
